We periodically release stats about the community, about feature usage, etc. We release the stats when we announce things, to celebrate milestones, and many other reasons. Recently we released a little statistic about the usage of Community Details.

The reason why we haven't released many of the stats lately is that we're spending our time working on other things, and releasing those stats isn't a priority right now. That could change, and we could decide to release some stats in a blog post or announcement of some sort, but we usually don't just post stats..just to post stats.

As an Ambassador, why do you think this is important information for you right now? How and why does it help you, and how does it change your ability to be a member of this community and to do great things as an Ambassador?

Myself and others at CS HQ are focused on working on new things, like preparing for the launch of Events, and spending time on pulling and posting stats wouldn't be a wise investment of time.

But that could change, if it makes sense to release stats for some reason.

Perhaps the question rises as CS ambs (who are fighting on the front line regarding "customer support") are getting more and more negative vibes on CS? At least in my case I get the feeling that for example the quality and quantity of requests declines. Comitted hosts tell me that the number of requests goes down. Other active CS tell me that they get frustrated as the get requests from new members that see the host as a free hostel. I in my case got only two replies on my hundreds of welcome messages in NMW.
And due to those feelings it might be interesting how strong a community (that's what CS is in my opinion, and also you named it that way) of six million members really is. Considering that half of the European countries have each less inhabitants than CS in members (yes, we have more members than Finland or Denmark has inhabitants) the number looks really big.
That's why in my opinion the question is interesting. It's on us to promote the number. We have to convince new members (several new members joined because I told them about CS). If a higher percentage of those members is not active or not a member of the community (yes, I'm quoting you) it's hard to tell potential newbies that there are 6 million people offering you their hospitality. My mother told me not to lie :)
Hope this answers your question on why the number might be interesting for us :)

It's fair enough that CS HQ would be concentrating on other issues. However... if CS already has these stats, then posting them would only take two minutes.

So I guess my question is... does CS actually know the real stats about site usage?

I had assumed that it was somebody's job to know the stats about the website use, which might be used to form judgements about what is and isn't working. But perhaps that has never been done.

If nobody knows the stats, that is a fair answer and then we would know to stop asking.

Perhaps

I choose to believe the best of people for as long as possible. I think that makes life more fun... even if it means I get disappointed occasionally.

Perhaps they want to hide the numbers. But for the moment I choose to believe that they either don't have the numbers, or that they are just about to share them.

Either way, I'm sure that Sam or Colleen or Merci will explain it to us shortly. :)
