Losing the "couch request" war
Posted February 19th, 2013 - 12:11 pm by from Brisbane, Australia (Permalink)
As expected, the number of couch requests on the conversation has increased significantly in Brisbane over recent days.

Before the community details were removed I posted the same details "HOW TO REQUEST A COUCH" as a regular post, and then I bump it to the top occasionally.

Previously I was able to remove a couch request by flagging it, but I seem to have lost that power. So now, when there is a couch request, I respond by linking the people to the "HOW TO REQUEST A COUCH" post I mentioned above.

But it's not working:

https://www.couchsurfing.org/n/threads/brisbane-queensland-australia-hi-we-re-two-girls-from-holland-and-heading-on-the-1st-of-march-for-future-festival-we-are-looking-for-a-place-where-we

Is there anything left I can do to try and maintain some semblance of sanity on the Brisbane page, or is the war over, and we lost?

Ahh... that conversation has now (finally) been deleted. The relevant comment that I was trying to highlight was this:

"i ain;t big on rules!!,is it really hurting any one? posting in here there interest in finding a couch?as for me i would rather have someone post in here,in comparision to sending me a couch request that doesn't have the slightest reference to my profile,ie a template they people multi send, any way thats my view ...flag me lol:}"

I didn't know how to respond to that. Perhaps this person is right... perhaps this is the future.

I'd say that about roughly 1 out of 3 topics on my city's places page is, at all times, a couch request. Add up the "rooms for rent" ads (and those ridiculous "can you send in a picture of you holding x name" requests), and there's barely any place left for actual conversations and events planification, as those messages are at the bottom of the page before anyone sees them. And to think we're in low touristic season... I can't imagine how spammilicious our group will look in the summer.

I'm flagging things as they come and encouraging people to participate in redirecting requests where they belong, but this is extremely time consuming. The old groups system was far from being perfect but we managed to tackle that problem and ultimately got about one of two misplaced topics a week.

Do you know the story about Hercules and the Lernean Hydra?
I give up, I'm no Hercules.
I tried to flag the couchrequests till now but it's a lost battle...I think I will just not look at the City page anymore.

Congratulations to the CS site for your constant "improvements".
But I guess you simply don't care...
