Sadly...I have to agree.
It's like trying to cure a patient who instead wants to die...

Old CS was a big community of individuals.
New C$ is a big mass of increasing numbers.
I am no number...

Hey, *I* am the oldest! (At least by figures?) :)

But anyway, sad to say - I guess you are right?
I give it one more shot at the NMW meeting in Paris to hear my friends
https://www.couchsurfing.org/meetings.html?mid=176140
(everybody in the area invited to join!)
and if that does not satisfy me - find me on BW!

Greetings,
Christian

Thanks Colleen. I have no doubt that the people in CS HQ are kind-hearted, and I hope you don't cop too much negativity. :)

If you have the time, it would be awesome if you were able to find a few answers for the curious among us:

1) a few of us have been interested in getting to the bottom of the story regarding the site stats. If the stats don't exist, then that is fine... we can stop asking. But if the stats do exist, then we pledge you our undying love and a hot chocolate with marshmallows if you can share that information with us. :)

2) when community details were removed, several people here posted some very interesting points about why that might not have been the best option. I think Juan outlined many of the concerns nicely, so I won't repeat them here. I think many people would be very appreciative if we could know the HQ response to those concerns.

3) do you know why we are no longer able to automatically remove couch requests (and other spam) from the place pages? And if we can't flag spam, nor provide community details, then do moderators exist anymore?

I understand if you don't have time to answer these questions, and I promise I won't be sad or angry about any answer, or even a lack of an answer.

Peace & chocolate,
Temu

Oh, yes - good idea!

Whilst your at it, maybe check the (former) groups of Bamberg and Bayreuth
(both cities with a well visited UNESCO world heritage!)
and tell why a search for their city ("Where would you like to go?")
ends up in no-name city Coburg?
Or the same for Braunschweig, ending in Hannover?

I do believe Colleen when she says the people working in the cs-team are nice and engaged people, and that the people working with it are good at it. But they do not make me trust that cs is still our community after it is sold, and that I have any influence on it now. They do not make me feel I and people around me are any important to cs as company or community. They did nothing that make the the website more useful to me. They made lot of changes that makes the site less usefull and sometimes even useless to me. They made a layout that is very confusing for me and difficult to navigate in, and make me often avoid to read groups. I do hear complaints for it from other people too, not only in here. Could be it will be good again after maybe half a year, but that is actually very long to wait for something a big part of my life depend upon. Could be there are some communication about it, but I have to search for it in different forums and even outside the cs-website. I am still here because I love the couchsurfing way of living, and had so many great experiences from here, and right now I have no alternative.

As far as I remember the main statement of Chasey on his event held in Berlin to promote the B corp change was that "nothing changes due to the stat change". This has been the main reason a lot of folks stood in CS with a "wait and see" attitude.
How does this fit to your statement "that it went from a non-profit that communicated often with members and gave them a sense that they could therefore drive the technological direction of the website, to being a company with more resources but a less transparent vision of the direction of the website, one that is developing and changing"?
Unfortunately in this point you are right. What I see is a website that becomes worse. Almost more bugs in a website that is developed from "experienced full time employees" than in one maintained by volounteers. A far from perfect but usable websites looses usability. The community feeling, the main background of CS is going down the drain (it's a "we" vs. "they" between old CS and the new HQ). Really important threads are deleted (I'll keep your posting in my mail inbox, Don) which leaves a bad taste of censorship (not that I imply it, there will be reasons that you deleted Dons posting).

+1.

Groups are impossible to moderate now. I give up, ulcer pills are not free. I can't keep on seeing as useful features are dissapearing. Let spammers and freeloaders take control of the forums.

Hi Justin, that's quite the post.

I think there is an perception by some that Couchsurfing Staff are not aware of the various issues on the website, whether that be new-users with incomplete profiles, new users posting Couch Requests instead of using Couch Search, a Couch Search that works, Place Page geography issues, Events that are hard to promote and discover, etc. It's unfortunate that there's a miscommunication or misunderstanding between us, because we are certainly aware of all of those things.

I think often times members judge Couchsurfing HQ by the current state of the website, and use that as an indicator of what the company believes and envisions for the community/site. I can understand why members may do that.

But the Couchsurfing website is going through a huge transition, and community is going through a tough transition too. Colleen's post is asking for everyone's patience with us (and the site) during this transition, since it takes time for us to update the website and all of the features.

The current website and the state of the functionality is not a complete or accurate representation of what Couchsurfing will be in the future, or what the staff want it to be.

Have you watched last month's webcast? Our development team, represented by Andrew and Merci, answered many Couchsurfing.com questions and addressed them in detail. Andrew goes into detail about Couch Search's failings in the webcast, here: http://youtu.be/dlJbP2MkcZI?t=10m50s

Hi Justin,

I don't know you, and what I say may be out of place. I mean no disrespect.

From your long comments it seems clear to me that you are upset. I share your concern, but I have three small suggestions that you can take or leave as you prefer:

1) the time & effort you are putting into these posts, like the time and effort you are putting into your community, are the opposite of the suggestion that is the title of this thread. I know how disappointing it is to see something you care about slip away... but if the only emotional options are anger, sadness or caring less, then I think the OP has a potentially good point, and you might get more value from simply caring less about CS. Good for your soul.

2) I think much of your anger makes sense, but I still think you may benefit from pulling a few punches. I know your comments don't come from a negative place, but a few of them were somewhat negative. You may be 100% justified for that negativity... but in my meagre and imperfect understanding of the world, it's better to either try the friendly approach, the sarcastic joking approach, or simply ignore what you can't fix. That leaves you happier.

3) You obviously have great passion for improving the world -- something that I think all readers can appreciate from your comments, and admire about you. Perhaps there are other avenues outside of CS were you could use those talents. I don't mean this as some sort of conspiracy to drive people away from CS... but given the "imperfect" nature of your relationship with CS HQ at the moment... even they might agree that perhaps you should use your talents on BW or some other venue for the moment, at least until tensions have simmered down. That way you can be working hard to build community, while saving CS HQ from your wrath.

These are just a few of my random thoughts. I've made plenty of mistakes before, so perhaps all my advice is junk. Please take it or leave it as you prefer.

And in case nobody else tells you, then "thank you" for all the hard work you have done over the last six years of volunteer work for the CS community. :)

Peace & love,
Temu
