oh poo this analogy has lost its purpose people are just making arguments to fit the narrow conversation of waiter and restaurant. there's much more we could be discussing if the conversatio nwasnt so limited ;)

so i'm opening it back up again, i hope.

when i got my ambassador invitation, it looked like this:

"Hello Cassie,

Thank you for being an active CouchSurfing member! People like you really help us to be a real community, not just a website.

Based on how much you already support our community, I’d like to invite you to become a CouchSurfing Ambassador.

CouchSurfing Ambassadors are active CS members who represent the CS spirit by organizing events, greeting new members, and generally just setting a great example for how to be a good host and surfer.

I think you’d be great at this, and hopefully would also have a lot of fun along the way. If you’d be interested in joining our program, please respond and let me know so that I can add you.

Sincerely,
David
CouchSurfing Member Experience"

that's exactly what i did. organised events, advised people who sent me bad couch requests in how they can write better ones, tried to re-direct traffic on the boards to appropriate places, and was active and, i think, helpful.

none of that has changed.

i organised an event last week, im trying my frickin damndest to work with place pages and let people know where appropriate places for couch requests are and rideshares etc, and i welcome new members. but i don't host through this site. largely because of the for-profit thing, and i don't like that my hosting / surfing experiences contribute to statistics which cs uses to present in business forums. my aim is to share a community. not to make someone else money.

and that's what cs is to me today. it's a community, separate to hosting and surfing. the quality of the surfers has seriously degraded recently, too. only 1 in 10 seem to actually read my profile. i don't need to deal with that - so i host in BW.
on the flipside, BW doesn't have the numbers to give me much of a roel there. it doesn't need people monitoring the boards because there arent that many posts. ther arent enough ppl yet to make events. most new members have come over from cs and dont need an introduction. so, i stay in CS for the community aspect and to help out travellers

THAT'S why i became an ambassador. to meet travellers, and help them out. NOT to promote cs as the one-and-only. (i rarely even mentioned cs to ppl i met travelling! i'd be very wary to make sure they were the 'right' type of traveller before i even mentioned it!)

thats my 2 cents. i'll give it as a tip to the waiter i left behind.

I felt sorry for the waiter so thought of a new simile to replace him :)

I'd say this is more like being a member of facebook, but also having made a group. You put time and effort into that group, and agreed to run it in accordance with Facebook policies. So this would be like posting in your group telling people who visit the page to join the group in google + instead, because of recent changes in facebook you don't agree with. And then have facebook threaten to either give up your group or delete your facebook profile for advertising google +. (if google + were a not for profit this would work even better)

simon- thats part of my point, too. i never signed up to be a representative on cs. i signed up to do just what was asked of me - help with meetings, welcome new members, etc. my role as ambassador should not lead to restriction of opinions expressed in MY profile. if i was happy with cs, things would obviously be different. as it is, i'm gona be honest and true to my feelings. yet continue to work with the community and try to make it work as best it can.

Trevor,

>It is a small number of individuals - very small. I would suggest that this is the most important point for HQ to remember.

You might see how "small" the number is by the rate at which BeWelcome is growing :)
this number is as "small" as the number of good hosts on CS or people who are active organizers :) that is important thing to consider as well.

Also, just to make it clear for a future conversation, Trevor, could you please respond to a simple question? (Yes/No will do, btw.) Do you receive any kind of advances from CSHQ (a.k.a Couchsurfing Ink)?

> Anyone who wants to help build CS into the greatest hospitality exchange anywhere at any time, is welcome to do so.

Oh, Sergio, as far as I heard US corporations are not allowed to use volunteers... so let say couchsurfer X "wants to help build CS into the greatest hospitality exchange". What about his/her reward? :)

> Anyone who has acknowledged in their comments that they don't want to help CS...

Could you make some some intellectual effort and try to destinguish Coushsurfing Community and Couchsurfing Inc.? Do you realize that they are not the same?

> Anyone who has acknowledged in their comments that they don't want to help CS, but continue to post negative comment after negative comment, should be deleted so that they can make a home somewhere else where hopefully they'd be happy.

Wow, great! Now we have our little godneess Sergio who decides what CSHQ and CS community suppose to do! We shall obey! US Law is far much low then His Godness will.

> The community might lose a couple dozen vocal anarchists. But the community will be much better off, focused on making CS great.

Commarade Joseph Stalin would be proud of you, Commarade Sergio! Of course, "the cause justifies the means"!

> Who decides is besides the point.

Sergio, do you realize that you might be trapped by your own words? :))

Lets say we decide by simple majority of Ambassador votes. It seems your position is not very popular in this group. I would even speculate that it is NEGATIVE towards Couchsurfing COMMUNITY. Negative after negative comments towards most vocal COMMUNITY members. Let imagine that simple majority of votes will support me. Are you ready to be deleted from CS?
:)))

I find the accusation that opinions are paid for a bit annoying too... but I'm sure Trevor will answer soon to clear it up and then it will be a moot point.

I don't think anarchists always claim that people are paid for their opinions. I'm an anarchist, and I don't claim that.

Glad that you want to switch this to a discussion about political philosophy. More fun that a debate about waiters. Though I'm not sure that HQ should be deleting people based on political philosophy. And if you want to delete people based on politics, you might want to be clear whether you are more concerned about the syndicalist, agorist, communist, libertarian, or other type of anarchist. I don't personally believe in hyphenated-anarchy, but others do. Also... while it would be nice to believe that everybody else here was an anarchist too, I doubt that is true.

If we're going to delete people based on philosophy, I think we should get rid of the authority sycophants first. They don't really add much to any debate except the words "yes, sir". Then perhaps we should go after the scientologists... because really... have you read that stuff? ;)

Sergio, so let say that i feel that this is you, who's primary purpose to stay around CS is to disrupt the COMMUNITY and to protect the Company. Shall I request your removal based on that feeling? Do not you feel that you are making joke of yourself? :)

John,

just to clarify - I did not accuse anyone of paid opinions so far, yet I do think it is interesting to ask this stightforward question and see the reaction. In general, I do hope that there is no paid opinions (that would be a very stupid move from CSHQ), but I find it slightly annoying and a bit suspicious when someone is in a position to approve anything and everything from CSHQ, even those actions that CSHQ admit as their mistakes.

I think the Collins dictionary does a better job in this instance.

anarchist [ˈænəkɪst]
n

1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a person who advocates the abolition of government and a social system based on voluntary cooperation

2. a person who causes disorder or upheaval

===================

The etymology of the word makes it clear that it means "without ruler" or "without government". The word literally comes from "an-" (without) and "archon" (ruler/lord).

For clarity, I think the second Collins definition is better described as "chaos". Whether anarchy would lead to chaos is a much debated question in political philosophy.
