Yeah, I like it, actually. I'm not one of those people that thinks a surfer who already has to send a dozen requests should have to spend time sifting through every single grain of information in a profile. I like the simplification. And I can still say yes or no based on the quality of the requests (which have been going down).

But I do agree that the "languages" should have more options for fluency. I speak English perfectly, but I also speak French - not well enough to say "fluent" but certainly well enough to travel France and host French surfers. I also speak Indonesian - not nearly as well as French, but I could host an Indo surfer in a pinch!

I don't understand. Please explain it to me. Will we have two profiles -- the classic one and the "hosting one" or will we only have the hosting one. I am confused.

And for profile information:

Do you think it's a good idea to put content optimized for on layout to a second one layout? Combined by the brilliant idea of removing all HTML tags that made a profile readable you once more destroy content built up by members.

In my case line breaks seems to vanish. From a content block (a DIV set up with CSS to make a scrollable content box) all HTML was removed so it's a nonbreaking load of text instead of a user friendly layout.

can someone please answer my question. will we have two profiles or only the one? I note on the hosting profile that areas traveled to are not included plus where one would like to travel. I always look at this first to see what we may have in common.

Agree all the above comments except Michael's. Additional problems on my new 'hosting profile':

Language:
- my mother tongue (Hungarian) is missing (not showing up)...
- what is 'Chinese (Mandarin)Intermediate' on my real profile is became 'Fluent in translation missing: en.i18n_lang_. Learning 中文(简体字)'

Something I just learnt about my hosting history:
- My profile starts with 'Mostly hosts women' - Well, I hosted man and women (sometimes both in the same time) but never bored with the head counting...

Our sincerest apologies for the confusion!

The "hosting profile" site (https://www.couchsurfing.org/n/hosting/profile) should only have been accessible to members in cities where we test the new hosting features.
We focussed our communications on these affected members for now as too many features are still subject to severe changes.

We are in an early test phase and all of the new hosting features are beta-features. We are testing different ways to show profiles for the new surf/host engine.
However the testing outcome, the new hosting features are not a replacement for classic couch search. They are an addition to it and shall give hosts more choice over their hosting activities.

@annarital: We are not migrating but only testing the new features in a very limited number of cities (currently 15) and only with for limited number of hosts. We messaged all of the affected hosts and are working closely with some of the most active hosts in test cities. They have been kind enough to give us very helpful feedback on the tested features.

@juanderer/Dan: we're looking into the way references are being displayed and will fix this.

Once again, our apologies for the caused uncertainty, we're in the process of restricting the site https://www.couchsurfing.org/n/hosting/profile to members in test cities.

Guys, in my very humble opinion, it seems like the people who have become CS "employees" are trying to show their work.
(...)
And it's good when we change things for better.
But I just can't get it when the changes are constantly happening (seems like every week - or at least month - there's some new changes in the CS system), and this particular one we are discussing in this thread is definitely FOR THE WORSE: so reductive, basic and unappealing.
Which we can all together contribute to a betterment of CS.

It was obviously a template for something which hasn't been announced yet and I assume there is a team working on it set it up properly (beta testing).
I have a feeling we should all give a chance to who is working on it and check out the final product and not start listing all of what is wrong, just as Gerrit mentioned.
It's easy to make mistakes when you are in a "building up" phase.
The mistake was to let it be accessible to everybody and it was already stated by Martina.
Just to quote Theresa: communication, communication, communication.
We are NOT communicating when we start criticizing and complaining about something not yet official.
Of course, if the Hosting profile came out as it is seen today it would be horrible to my eyes too.

Much Ado about nothing (in this case)

I like David's idea about "Has hosted 122 women, 17 men and 14 couples. Has 166 positive references."

Indeed the test was shared everywhere, saying look what's next...
Terrible again people can be mislead that way.
On the other hand, I am assuming some feedback given here will be taken into account.
So, maybe it was a bad thing for a good one.

Basically, Massimo -> +1

David Allan
"Has hosted 122 women, 17 men and 14 couples. Has 166 positive references"
+1, that definitely sounds like a good feature.

Simple-Simon
"References should be only given for hosting and surfing"
Sorry, but I personally totally disagree.
Surely for people like you and me, references from people we didn't host/stay with are not so necessary.
BUT I would definitely prefer to see 10 references of people my contact only met, than no reference at all, for instance! (or even 1 or 2... in that case, I click on the page of the person who left the reference, to see if that person is an active/recognized member of CS, it will be helpful in my opinion)

I just wanted to clear things up: while we're still working many elements of the surf/host engine, the term "girls" has never been part of any of these features.

(On a side note, two of our Product Mangers who work on these features are women, and I know for sure they would not even consider calling women girls.)

We're testing the features is a select few cities and all your "preventative input" is highly appreciated. At this stage, we are not replying to a large part of the feedback as it is integrated right away and the product is far from being released to a larger audience.

Please keep bringing problems up as they do help us improve the service before we launch to any more cities!

@annarital

No, I am saying that we did not design any parts of the product to ever say "girls".
However, the specific browser settings on an individual machine may cause elements to be displayed differently from how they are intended and actually configured on the site.

To give you what's been configured: this is what a "hosting profile" looks like on our testing environment (ignore the broken images).

If any of you have a screenshot saying "girls", then please post them here or send it to martina@couchsurfing.com. It would help us detect and fix any bugs!

@David Allan

As you mentioned, we have disabled access to the hosting profile link so my question for visuals goes out to those who have seen the surf/host engine as a live feature.

Martina, from what I understand the concern about the "hosting Gender" is felt not as an information but as a warning regarding what gender this user "tends" to host.
One thing is reporting the clear hosting preference of the host, one thing is doing a statistic about the gender of people he hosted.
Personally I hosted many couples of which the girl had a profile and the BF didn't and the request came from the girl.

Posted July 17th, 2013 - 9:39 pm by from Oakland, United States (Permalink)
@Simple-Simon @Massimo

Understood. We intend to provide members with the best possible tool-set to make informed decisions about whether or not to stay with another member. Extreme preference patterns may provide relevant information upon which members may chose to base their decisions.

That said, it is not intended to sound like a "warning" but should be an informative pointer and we are still working on the wording to make this clearer. Thanks for bringing this up!

To make it sound less suggestive, we've considered rewording this information to something like; "hosted 7 males, 19 females, 8 several people".

@Ronald Plak

We're collecting feedback in many ways: talking directly to experienced members in test cities (in certain cases even on a daily basis), reading about concerns on the website, fixing reported bugs, observing data-driven performance, reacting to personal messages, continuously testing internally. Ambassadors are absolutely welcome to give their feedback in any of the above ways!

To your question why they weren't asked first: Ambassadors, by nature, tend to know the system too well and would naturally have skewed our data for the better. Moreover, we would still not know how less experienced members understand the system and react to it.

You said:I read somewhere that CS wants to add a new feature where surfers can choose to let the system automatically sent messages to possible hosts after which the surfer gets a list of the hosts that replied that they might be available. Is this feature being tested now combined with this new host profile? Could you maybe explain a bit more of this new feature?

You got it. The new "hosting profile" discussed here is part of the new feature (the surf/host engine) that you describe. Consider it to be a partial view of your full profile. It is an abridged version mainly for Privacy reasons.
In a nutshell (as many details will still change), when a traveler plans a trip to a test city, available hosts there will receive a notification asking them if they would allow the visiting traveler to send them a message. For all hosts who click yes, the traveler receives a notifications that encourages him to check out their profiles and send a personalized request.

We're currently trying to make it clearer to surfers that they are expected to write a personalized request.

As long as wording goes I don't like 'smokes/doesn't smoke inside'.
When I saw the first scrape of the new profile it said 'doesn't smoke inside' for me.. Well, I don't smoke at all. I'm sure it's meant for whether smoking is allowed in the house or not, but it's not what it sounds :-/

Also, I don't have children, but my sister does and we live in the same house (even same floor), so showing 'has no children' is true for me, but not for everyone living in the house a couch surfer is to visit and 'host no children' is also false.

I think showing by gender how many persons someone has hosted is way better than saying 'almost/always hosts men/women', but as Massimo has said it there's a difference between hosting preference and statistics. I'm always more interested in the former for example.

Anyway, the best thing I see now is having the 'View Classic Profile' option, so I'll always rather go for that and do my own screening of the profile ;-)
