An Important Source of CS Information
Posted June 10th, 2009 - 7:54 pm by from St. Catharines, Canada (Permalink)
Dear Friends,

Sometimes, you may have questions about the CS that none of our open resources seem to answer. So, if you are enthusiastic and thorough, you peruse repeatedly the FAQ page, and the Terms of Use, and the ref guidelines, and every bit and morsel of data in the open. Then, you ask your friends, shop around for the answer, then post it here, and maybe someone will know the answer, and maybe not, and maybe what they think they know is not even entirely correct. Finally, you will use the CUQ button, and your question will be apprehended by a team of volunteers, who might not know the answer themselves (sorry: should be saying “ourselves”), and it will sit for a week or two before finally being answered. At which point, just you, 1 (one) person will know the answer, and the next person to ask the same question might be skipping through the same loops.

Does it sound familiar at all?
If it does, you'd be happy to learn that we at the AMT are launching a new Info & Awareness programme, and hope you find the news exciting.

A new group has been created , dedicated to “SAQ” (Seldom Asked Questions): http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=20198 .

At the moment, the project is led by only two people: FENIX LAKSHMI and myself. Later, more volunteers might join us.

Shortly, every CS ambassador will be added as a member to the group.
I shall not be describing here how it works in detail – please see the group description and guidelines for that.

Let it suffice to say that Cintia and I are committed to research every issue thoroughly and give you everything we can find. We are investing a lot of love and effort into this project, and hope it will help:

- educate our members
- educate our ambassadors
- dissuade the occasional suspicions of “conspiracy of silence” within the “higher echelones of CS”
- satiate your curiosity and boost your enthusiasm

Any questions, suggestions and remarks about the project are very welcome – right here, in this thread.

Happy Surfing!

I think this is a great idea & I applaud the two of you for volunteering yourselves to be site-crawlers.

Hey Ricardo,

You are right, our tools are not yet nearly as flexible as we'd love to see them, in spite of the truly heroic efforts of the tech team (as every computer-illiterate person, I'm in absolute awe of them).

Here's what we propose to do:
a. as soon as a question is posted and answered, a link to it, with a few descriptive key words, will be added to the Group description page.

Prior to posting a new question, the Ambs are expected to just use the Ctrl+F feature to scan the page for the key words pertaining to their question. It's low-tech, but hopefully will work. :)

At the moment, I do not have a good idea for an order of arrangement of the cataloged questions. Hope to come up with something later - or maybe there will be useful suggestions here.

b. If someone misuses the group and posts a new question (or something irrelevant) in an old thread, they will be requested to repost it where it belongs. Shortly, the post would be deleted.

Did I guess your questions? Got more? ;)

Good day to you,

I want to join the group but it doesnt let me. Any idea?

Hi Amina,

The group is moderated, and one cannot join, one needs to be added to it.

Your regional coordinator will add you shortly (I've added all the Globals yesterday, so they could add Country Ambs, so they in turn could add City and Nomadic. But the site was glitching, so it takes a little longer than initially expected).

Thank you all for your patience!

We are adding members, but the site has had a bunch of off-moments lately.

Here's what you can do to help adding every single Amb to the group; if you've already been added to it as a moderator, add as many of the ambassadors in your region/country/city as you can.

Once all the Ambs are in the group, only Cintia and I will remain moderators.

Many thanks for your help!

This sounds like a really good initiative! Thanks Eli. However,it would be usefull if these answers could be easily searched for. For that, we need them to be searchable by catagories, not just by keywords. I'm afraid the groups technical structure may not be the best for it. Have you considered using the CS wiki, or other formats?

Thansk, and i would be interested to join.

Hi Ram,
I just checked, you are already a member of the group. Just check at the bottom of your group lists and it should be there - Ambassador Info

OK, I talked to Jim, and he's working to make membership in the group automatically tied in with the flag - in other words, every Amb will be automatically a member.

He says it might take a couple' days. Meanwhile, we are trying to add everybody manually as fast as we can.

Thanks again for your patience!

(Just a reminder: you don't need to be a member of the new group to be able to read the posts. It is visible to all.)

OK all,

The group's up an' running, and membership is tied to the Amb status now - in other words, every Amb is a member of the group. We are looking forward to your questions.

A quick explanation of the rule asking members not to answer there each other's questions, but to contact the mods instead; as we are committed to verifying every answer given in the group, we have to make sure the answer to be posted is true and full.

If you want to propose an answer, once you contact us, we shall be happy to verify it and give you thumbs up to post it.

Hope this makes sense.
