Although I just wrote to Sheryl ten minutes ago to say I would pass on France, I have now changed my mind. April - May would be perfect. I am also interested in biking the canal du midi either before or after if anyone else wants to join me. But Sheryl will see you and Judy somewhere long before next April .

Katt - as I have one meet-up under my belt at my home for the Toronto Film Festival in 2010, I am also glad to lend an organizing hand if needed for France.

Many thanks

Katie - many thanks for the offer of help - it's much appreciated!

Hello

I'm not yet retired and I think it's a great idea to propose different periods in the year 2013 to meet up and I will be in Brittany on next mid-April for one week and I invite CSers to meet and stay in my area not far Guingamp, Callac and Saint-Brieuc, it's up to you,
Have a good weeek-end

copy/paste of my post in the 'isn't it about time...' thread :

First 2 weeks of April I could join (in France/Dordogne) because of Belgian school holidays although I can't promise my presence yet, and that period we might have a couple from this group surfing with us :p

Pol can't join because of work. So I will have 3 free spaces in my car from Antwerp to Dordogne, about 10 hours drive? And if I need to bring our surfing couple from this group, only 1 seat is left, but hopefully one of the Istanbul gang can join me/us. I will surely ask her (and in the meantime I noticed that she is interested, YEEEAAAHHHH!!!).

I can bring our small tent ;-)

School holidays in France (zone B - Limoges? = 2nd half of April) = PERFECT because less trafic in 1st half :-)

Easter holidays in France
Saturday April 20th 2013 - Monday May 6th 2013

hi Katty,
hi dear 50s+ Travellers!
if you ask/write to the CS administration to support me in issuing me a visa to France!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Halima

Posted December 1st, 2012 - 4:15 pm by from Stoke-on-Trent, England (Permalink)
A well made point, Halima.

I really feel for those who have major issues getting visas. We in the UK / US etc take travel so much for granted and visa issue for many destinations is pretty straightforward. It must be incredibly frustrating to have to go through a tortuous, expensive and uncertain process when you want to travel - especially when it is relatively easy for Westerners to visit your country within minimal bureaucracy. Life is very unfair.

Judy,
Really pleased that you have heat. How very comforting at long last.

My American daughter is coming over in April during that spring break and I run about 1 dance a month so subject to those events I might be able to come.

It would be such fun. I have a tent and sleeping bag,

Be well and enjoy,

Posted December 3rd, 2012 - 8:19 pm by from Stoke-on-Trent, England (Permalink)
Thanks for clarifying the dates, Cadence.

Summarising for Jo and others:

Where:
France was suggested a few times as a possible location and so Richard and I volunteered the Dordogne. We have a holiday home in the area and so we could host a few people with the possibility of nearby gites / chambre d'hotes if needed.

When:
We started this thread so that those interested could add their names and preferred dates - consensus was the last weekend in April.

What to see etc:
The region is known for its chateaux - many with gardens
There are many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascoux cave paintings
Wine regions are nearby
The area has more than its share of the 'most beautiful villages in France'.
The area is known for its gastronomy.
I plan to suggest day and half day itinereraries with meet up in the evenings for meals, socialising etc.

Practicalities:
We can host ~ 10 (on a first come, first served basis). I am contacting local gites etc and will post details in the new sub group.
The Dordogne is *very* rural so we need to ensure that there are sufficient car spaces and drivers. Hopefully, we can group by vehicle and those in the group can agree their itinerary for the day between themselves. For this reason there will not be an official 'programme' per se.

A number of people have emailed me and I will get back to you. I'm working away at the moment so only have access to email / internet late in the evening -and via my mini tablet which is not the easiest thing to type on :)

Dates you choose in April fine with me. Or even early May if that is what happens. I will travel by car from south of Spain and could go thru Madrid or Barcelona if anyone needs a ride. Or fly to Paris and come down from there. So it would be helpful to have definite dates so I can make bookings. Will also appreciate a place to stay nearby in the Dordogne, particularly with the person organizing the meet-up.

Kathie,
I guess I need to add my name to this list. I wondered how so many of you seem to know each other already. Although I have been a member of this group for sometime, I was never set up to receive the postings.
I'm in the planning stages of this trip, a BIG step for me.

I would be interested in coming if work permits. It seems a shame to be in France and not take the opportunity to meet with members.

I'm wondering if there is anyone coming from the Paris or Centre region to the event as I would need transport. I'm not a confident driver in France, don't even have a GPS and it seems the Dordogne is very rural so public transport doesn't seem to be an option. Can anyone suggest transport and accommodation for me?

Cindy and I are planning on taking the TGV from Paris to the meet up.
Would that work for you?

Cherie

Posted January 30th, 2013 - 5:41 pm by from Epernon, France (Permalink)
HI Cherie
yes that could work. Do you have any details of dates and times and prices you are looking at?
Frances

Frances,

We just got our accommodations reserved in Paris and for the meet up: we'll be getting down to the details w/the TGV soon.

We'll be leaving Paris on the 25th. You can find prices, times, etc. here:

http://www.b-europe.com/Travel/Trains/TGV?gclid=CPWHsfqrkbUCFc6DQgodJVcARQ

It's my understanding we'll need reservations.

I'll be returning to Paris either the 29th or 30th via TGV: I'd love company.

I fly out of CDG on the 30th, headed back to Reykjavik.

Cherie

Hi Cherie
Thanks. Let me know what trains you want to take and I'll book the same though we might not be sitting together if booked separately as usually specific seats are allocated. Any idea how we get from the train station to the venue? I'm a total novice at 'group' travel.
Cheers
Frances

Darrell,
This will be my first airline trip anywhere by MYSELF. This is why it is such a huge undertaking for me, taking me out of my comfort zone. I was in Europe 38 years ago with my husband (now deceased) on a business trip. Anytime that I have traveled (USA)it has been with someone or at least someone has met me at the other end. I'm about to delve into uncharted territory. Scary.

Yes Tina - I think you may be referring to me and I am definitely going. I have pm'd you on another thread and hopefully we can renew our friendship either in London or Norwich long before the France event.

Cheers

Can someone please explain EXACTLY where the meet up somewhere in the Dordogne is and how one gets there. I think there is no TGV near that area, where one can stay, how to move around etc without a car. Without an exact location how can one plan or book? Help!

The information you need is under the thread, "Traveling to the Durdogne" by our host, Kathie.

Here:

"We are located in St Pardoux d'Ans (part of the commune of St Pantaly d'Ans). To find the hamlet on Google type in 'St Pardoux d'Ans 24640'

Travelling to the Dordogne

The nearest airports from us are:

Bordeaux - 2hrs (http://goo.gl/maps/sVhtx)
Limoges - 1hr 26m (http://goo.gl/maps/hlzBn)
Bergerac - 1hr 21m (http://goo.gl/maps/h7xPW)

IMPORTANT
If you are arriving by air and hiring a car you must arrange to pick it up at the airport. Public transport in the Dordogne is virtually non existent and taxis are very expensive (Unlike the US and Canada, car is not more expensive to pick up at the airport rather than 'downtown').

Can those planning to join the meeting add their mode of arrival and, if flying, their proposed flight dates, times and arrival airport etc. on this thread?

For those flying to Paris CDG you can take the TGV to Angouleme. From Angouleme you can connect to Perigueux where we should be able to pick you up.

Likewise there is a 'jetbus' shuttle service from Bordeaux airport to the railway station where you can get a train to Perigueux.

So Cindy and I are planning to take the TGV to Angouleme. From Angouleme we can connect to Perigueux, where Kathie should be able to pick us up.

Hope this helps.

Cherie
