Request for travel tips

Hi I am new to Couch surfing. I am planning a trip, by train, from Shanghai, via Mongolia and Russia, to the UK in July 2013. I was wondering if any members have made this trip, or part of it, and I would welcome recommendations for places to 'stop off' and things to see and do. Looking forward to your replies. Ann

While I am in China I plan to visit Guilin, Xian and Bejing as well as Shanghai. I will join the trans Mongolian express in Beijing and travel to St Petersburg, then through Estonia, Latvia, Luthuiania, Poland, Germany and France before taking the Eurostar to the UK.
As I said this is the plan, I was just wondering if anyone who had done a similar trip had any suggestions to make re places to 'stopover' or visit?

Thanks for your response. I've had a look at the silk road option and I think I will do that another time - thanks for the idea. Did you enjoy the trip?
