looking for room to rent in Wellington starting October 2012

Hi Wellington Couchsurfers,

This post may be a little early as it's only August but what the heck.

I am due to arrive in Welly at the beginning of October for at least 6 months and am looking for a room in a house, preferably with other cool couchsurfing folks.

I'm not too familiar with Wellington and what areas are best to live in etc., but I am open to different ideas as long as it wouldn't mean living too far out of the main city.

I'm a marine biologist (my work and my passion) and I like to keep fit and getting out and enjoying the great outdoors as much as possible. I would like to think of myself as responsible, clean, respectful of others but at the same time quite social and not taking life too seriously.

If anyone knows of something coming up please do get in touch. I will of course keep checking the group as October approaches, and I look forward to meeting some of you in Welly soon.

best wishes

Hey everyone,

I wonder if any of you have used Trademe to look for an apartment or rooms in NZ? I just found a room that would be ideal for me with regards to location and availability but then I found out I have no way of getting in touch with the advertiser because Trademe does not allow IP addresses from outside NZ to register.

I understand that this is there because of security and fraud etc, but how the hell can I look in advance for rooms on there if it won't even let me correspond with the people who are letting the rooms?

this is quite worrying as I wanted to get something reserved in advance.

That's annoying with the IP address restriction. Sorry I can't help. Have you emailed trademe? there might be a work-around. I think occasionally people post their contact details on the trademe ad as well.

Just a thought though, if you're looking at room in a shared flat, I imagine most people will be reluctant to commit to a new flatmate without meeting them face to face, so the chances of being able to get something completely jacked up via trademe from out of NZ are quite slim anyway.

People who belong to CS might be a different story...

Good luck bro

Thanks for advice Ewan, yeah I did a bit of researching on the internet and found that Trade Me also needs a valid NZ landline number from people wanting to register as well, although I'm not sure if that's completely true? :)

I completely understand about wanting to meet people face to face and in reality I'm guessing I'll be much more productive in the first few days at the beginning of October after I arrive in Welly.

Still it would had been nice to had something sorted, to tick off my huge "to do" list lol

Trademe is very popular and many of us have used it.

You may find someone willing to let you use their login, I suppose (or somehow trick the computer into thinking your P is in NZ).
Or try Trademe's contact page to see if they can offer you a solution.

otherwise, there;s always Gumtree NZ to look at.

Hey Tim,

Yeah I've checked around and TradeMe don't offer any solutions if you're out of the country. The only way around this, and this is what I have done, is to ask a kind Kiwi if they could just log on their trademe account and pass on the email address of the person or persons that I have given to them in advance for the add that I am interested in.

All seems very complicated eh? Still it is possible, and should something work out, I'm more than happy to buy any helpful third party a nice bottle of wine as a thank you present!

Just wanted to give a quick update. I decided to email the guys at TradeMe and tell them my dilemma. Within 12 hours they had set up my account so I could see renters details, I just couldn't sell stuff. They were thoroughly polite and helpful in the email, what a nice bunch of people!!
