Love reading? Recommended books!!

I like reading, and I like reading books that have been recommended by friends.
How about you?

Let's share some of our recommended reads.

I'll start with one I read earlier this year- The brief wondrous life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz.

It's about a family from the Dominican Republic - but it's so much more than that. The writer has a totally original and offbeat style and structure, and I learnt a lot about the DR that I never knew. The story itself is woven together from multiple characters' perspectives. It's one of the saddest, funniest, sharpest books I've read in recent memory.

Hey Rachel, that book looks really interesting. Just looked it up and it's won a few serious awards!

I have one for you, The Shadow of the Sun, by Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski.

It's about the author's time spent in Africa (about 40 years more or less). A lot of the book makes for difficult and sad reading (different country, same scenario). I felt like it was really a humane, interesting, and realistic introduction to Africa.

Penguin books, $13, brilliant!

Great, I'll put that one on my "to read" list!
