Family of 5 (kids 7, 3, 1) camping through Norway July 2012, would love to meet up
We are doing a camper trip to Norway July 2012 and would love to meet some locals. We are a Swedish American family living in the south of Sweden. Martin, Heidi and son age 1, daughter 3, and daughter 7. We are planning our route now and wonder if you have any tips of things we should do or see. We would love to meet up and enjoy the company of some locals, so if you will be home and interested in meeting up with us for a fun day out, picnic, or a meal let us know! A sleepover is always fun too, and if we are camping all month may be a welcome change.
I also welcome tips of things to see, do, and camping tips. We are just planning our route and expect to go north past the polar circle, and work our way back through Oslo on the way back down the west coast of Sweden. We can plan to include visits to anyone who will be home along our route, or go places you can recommend as special.
We are looking for tips on fun family friendly adventure. It would be nice to know if there are any special summer festivals or events in your area that are worth checking out. We are imagining spending a month playing in nature tossing rocks in rivers with the kids. They are too small for long hikes, and the dramatic view from Preikestolen will have to wait for another time when I can be sure my curious infant son is old enough to know better than to toddle off the cliff :) Though I may send my husband and 7 year old on a rafting trip, and hang back with the other two littles so he can enjoy that adventure with her. We hope we can get our bikes on the trailer. We may mix in a bear park or such to add a bit of organized play space to what I imagine will be mostly a month in the wilderness. We are the type that appreciate local food, farm tours, harvest festivals, berry picking, and hayrides. And play grounds. Simple pleasures.
Also, this is our first trip camping in anything other than canvas tents. We thought the possibly cool and wet weather warranted a hard sided shelter now we have three kids. We think we will be traveling with Rapido Confort camper (http://www.originalrapido.co.uk/Confort.htm
) which is basically a hard sided pop up tent. Should we expect to set up at camp grounds or can we pull over and find places for free camping easily?
And are the tourist routes worth driving? Or are there other places just as spectacular that will not be packed with every other person from another country coming to Norway this July?
Thanks! Hope to hear from some welcoming Norwegians.
We will do family couch surfing trip in Norway in July, too.
We'd love to exchange our planning with you.
We also have a 4 y/o, still wanna try to reach Preikestolen.
We will start our trip on 7/11 in Kristiansand, go Preikestolen hiking on 7/13, 7/18,19 in Bergen and struggling whether we should go northern to Geiranger or down to Hardandervidda and back to Oslo about 7/25.
Which is more worthy of seeing and child-friendly if we just can choose one route? What are interesting to do with the kid on the way?
Would love suggestions from Norweigan families, too.
