Afterparties! (and pre-parties)
Posted August 31st, 2009 - 8:09 pm by from Brooklyn, United States (Permalink)
It's pretty early to make the call, but as I exist in a state of considerable immersion in the NYC techno/house/club scene (DJ, blah blah), I was going to go out on a limb a bit and suggest a few nightspots to roll out to after the daytime festivities are finished. For those of you here on the Friday night before the fest, I am most definitely going to the Bunker at Public Assembly- Surgeon and Octave One are playing back to back sets and it should be mind-blowing. Saturday is still up for grabs and will develop as the week progresses. Sunday there are options- I was probably going to Public Assembly again for Starkey et al., but there's also something at the Bell House in Brooklyn- again, I'll let you know as I do. Saturday will fill up, I just haven't done much homework but there's sure to be some loft or warehouse craziness to hit up. Seeing as Monday is a holiday maybe the people still in town should head to Cielo for Francois K's weekly?

This sketch is to become finished as the week progresses.

Wow - I'm bummed to miss Surgeon and Octave One on Fri. - have seen both of them separate, but not together. That would be mind blowing indeed!

As for Saturday. I've been in contact with a couchsurfer from Detroit who did the visuals during DEMF. His crew is throwing the reSolute party on Saturday and Sunday nights. He's gonna be there, but didn't yet have all of the details. I tried looking around for more info, but my google skills must be rusty ;) I've got his # though.

Honestly, I'de be all for hitting up a warehouse party.

If possible, please let us ladies know if any of the afterparties are at clubs where you have to dress up. I'm not really a dress & stiletto heels type of girl outside of work *unless I have to be.*

Hey guys - im performing organic video mixing at the Resolute after party on Saturday. Kiki, Adultnapper, and Connie are playing - party is going from Midnight to 9am - so should be some extra long sets from everyone.

Resolute requires that you RSVP to resolutenyc@gmail.com to receive the location info - i dont even know it yet, lol - but im pretty sure its at a loft or something similar.

To see what i mean by organic visuals - check out this:

That Resolute party sounds pretty good- Adultnapper always cuts up the rug! I know Connie personally- met her at one of her gigs, Resolute often has nice parties if a bit too minimal techno for my tastes(yuck! Gimme that Detroit beatdown! Berghain!) But I trust A'napper to do a good job. There's also a Warp records party at Le Poisson Rouge on Bleecker in the Villiage that night. That place usually has a high douchebag concentration too but Jamie Lidell is playing with secret guests so should be it should be pretty good.

Concerning Ceilo and the area, etc.- the Meatpacking district is basically for guidos and douchbags but Monday night at Cielo is always pretty good or totally awesome, depending. I've never been there either, usually too shagged out from the weekends, but I hear it's a good time. Every other club around there can safely be avoided without missing the slightest thing, that is unless you like sleazy guidos and $100 bar tabs. You're hearing this from someone who spends every weekend to absolute excess going to dance parties and still never going THERE.

My mobile number is 205 356 9988 for all y'all. I'm a hard act to follow so make use of it. Re: Aaron- my day is going to be hectic Friday but drop me a line sometime in the evening- I've got someone surfing, need to meet up, probably have a date after (she would be coming to the party), but for sure we're gonna end up in some bar in Williamsburg before (unless someone suggests a better option) for a little pre-game. You know what to do.

What about Pacha? They seem to be having the official afterparty of EZ...

Posted September 2nd, 2009 - 1:46 am by from Brooklyn, United States (Permalink)
Pacha! Pshaw! Dooouuuchebag city in there, don't go near. I don't care who they have playing, I wouldn't go even if they resurrected Ron Hardy for a party (okay maybe then I would). Eating at chain restaurants is bad enough, but partying at chain clubs? Come on. It's New York, you got options. The Bell House thing is gonna be good. Adultnapper is awesome. Both of those will be pretty much guido and meathead free and that's the way it should be. I mean, by Friday f*ck me if there aren't like 20 parties a night on this thread, none of them at Pacha. It's a busy weekend...

I know that a few people as of tomorrow will have the price/address info for the Resolute party tomorrow. Please DO NOT post it here, we don't want uninvited guests attending (ready: the NYPD or FDNY). Period! These things are emailed out for a reason...

It looks kinda cool, problem is I don't know who any of the DJs at this shindig are, which leads me to believe it may be just a bunch of hipsters... or even worse (the d-word!). Parties like this always come up and then I think, why not go see some world famous DJ/producer play somewhere similar, and then I usually go there. That's what you're doing during the day, right? Wouldn't want the afterhours to get outshined? It's really not hard to get world-renown talent for a warehouse event in NYC, so if you don't have it something may be amiss... think about it. Our bwoy here from the D has the right idea... Resolute is nothing if not dependable. They got a Sunday event with Tony Rohr and John Selway that looks pretty hot too, also banging on till the break of dawn. Since the RSVP info is already here on this page, I won't write it again. Curious heads check Resident Advisor for more info/alternatives.
Forget tropical islands! Who wants techno?

Hey William - I checked out that party link you posted and it does soung semi-hype.

I think from what all I read that it seems like it's being thrown by an artsy/avant-gard type of crowd - which I'm super down with (ever heard of Theater Bizarre? If not you should google it).

While the music might not be the most off the hook, there seems to be lots of visual, performance art type of activity planned...and another bonus is that they put the $ right out there.

The resolute party would be awesome too - and my group already RSVP'd for it - however, it does worry me that there is no cost listed.

Having spent a great deal of time in the Detroit party scene - not listing the price is usually shady business. You get there and find out they want $50 at the door. Not cool!

But, seeing as how my first love is house/techno...ultimately, I would rather attend the resolute party.

Give me the warehouse with the funky beats please!!!!!

Another Friday night option:

Mean Red + Good Peoples present FLASHING LIGHTS

at Glasslands Gallery, Kent between S 2nd and S 1st in Williamsburg. It's advertised as house/disco/techno/rave but I've been to this party before and they play some pretty cutting edge stuff, often contemporary UK style music (read: dubstep, grime, UK funky house)- it's also usually totally sick. To bad about the clash with the Bunker!

It's definitely getting stacked now- for anyone that prefers a posh NYC club, albiet one that actually will have good music, Cielo has:
Dancetracks Presents Pezzner with Brendon Moeller & IJ Catling at Cielo

this Friday also. This is 10 bucks advance and double at the door. I don't know all the talent on the bill but I know that Brendan Moeller owns- saw him at a loft party awhile back and buy his records all the time. Deeper tech/house with BASS! I'll still be at the Bunker tho...

Cielo sounds like it will be a blast! But one question, what will the dress code be like? I'm flying in from Minnesota, and I don't really want to bring along dress shoes as I don't really have the space. I'm wondering if all black sneakers would be sufficient?

Posted September 4th, 2009 - 5:10 am by from Brooklyn, United States (Permalink)
I wouldn't guarantee it- people in NYC dress nicer than they do in the rest of the country and Cielo is famous for velvet rope burn, especially on a Friday night when every guido in the tri-state area is trying to get in. I suppose if you bought advance tickets they couldn't really turn you away even if you wore joggin' pants, but they might try... I would wear something presentable, and probably not sneaks unless they really look like something special (like some $200 London ish). Loft parties are dress code free, although I would say in general it helps to look nice in this town, vain metrosexual that I am. Just pile on the hair gel and wear a rented tux and they'll let you in anywhere, if only for the laugh factor... (I'm jerking your chain now...). But tasteful semi-dress will give you an edge over the meatheads and guidos, who only THINK they know how to dress (try buttoning you shirt AT LEAST three buttons up for starters, even on the dancefloor...). Oh, these bad jokes could go on forever, I had better stop...
