Guitar on plane: advice needed!
Posted January 3rd, 2013 - 10:37 am by from Riga, Latvia (Permalink)
Hey there!
On January 10th I'm flying from Riga to Amsterdam by airBaltic plane. As I'm going to stay in Holland for a long time, I planned to take my guitar with me, because I am not me without my instrument, honestly. But! airBaltic don't let me to bring it as a carry-on, because it's size is bigger than allowed...
Well, what can I do? I don't want to go without my guitar! Any tips? Suggestions?..

depending on how 'must-have-with-me' your instrument is to you or how much money friendly airbaltic people want from you... maybe consider leaving the guitar at home and buying something on ebay or craigslist or some local pawn shop once you get over there.

remember that few years back airbaltic did not care too much about the exact dimensions of the luggage so maybe it is still possible 'sneak in' a bit over-sized luggage. can also try calling their office.

also if the instrument in question is electric guitar with a bolt-on neck then you can un-screw it put it back together once you reach your destination.

regards

Hey Julija!

It depends of which kind of plane will you fly with. It might be bombardier (the small plane with propellers) and also boing. If it's the small plane, air baltic can let you to fly with guitar as a hand baggage, but you need to leave it near the airplane on the trolleys. But it's kind of risky variant, because you never know which kind of plane will it be.

The best variant for you would be to buy extra seat for your guitar. :)

Hi there,

Can you tell me how you got on with this? My band are going to Riga to play a gig and Air Baltic aren't being very helpful about us taking guitars on board. They seem to be saying we have to buy a seat, when we know full well they'll fit in lockers.

Thanks!

Hey Andy,
Well, I left my guitar at home... Because it seems to be easier to buy the new instrument than to take my guitar on AirBaltic board... And yes, they insist on buying an additional seat. What can I say? Damn it! Maybe you'll have more luck.
