Legally Extending Stay in Latvia for a non-EU Citizen?
Posted January 6th, 2013 - 7:54 pm by from Riga, Latvia (Permalink)
Hey,

can anyone help with this - i have a friend (not an EU passport holder) who will soon approach end of the three month tourist stay in Latvia.

Does anyone have any information on the legal ways to extend stay in Latvia?

Regards,
Walter

Mind you, if that fella does not exit Schengen space after 90 days he may face up to 500EUR fine. ( few days is ok. Southern european nations usually don't give a flying toss on checking these so exiting from Italy worked out fine for a few mates- but pls don't quote me on this!!)
Then, as for next reentry- last half a year will be checked.
If he stayed 90 days limit in last half a year, will have to wait for that period abroad

cheers

I bet that is cause either you were having that lady next to you at the immigration office!
Or, after drooling on latvian girls decided to combine two useful things in one go LOL.
I managed to drag a female ozzie into EU, and eventually get second residence permit already, even apostile all her diplomas.. No marriage involved. Cost me a few grey hair though.

The Schengen visa is only a short-term visa. It cannot be extended beyond 90 days.
For stays of more than 90 days, the individual member states of the EU have retained jurisdiction for residence permits.

If your friend will have a chance to obtain that while he is still in Latvia on a tourist visa depends on his citizenship and the purpose of his intended stay. Without knowing this information, nobody can give sound advice.

I would highly recommend not to risk overstaying. It will damage his chances of any future visa being issued. If the visa was issued based on the invitation of a local, it will also fall back on that person, meaning that his invitation may be worthless to other non-EU citizens in the future.

Good luck!
