egypt in ramadan
Posted July 11th, 2011 - 7:00 am by from Barcelona, Spain (Permalink)
Hi there!
I will spend 3 weeks in August travelling around Egypt. Only after I bought the tickets I found out, that the whole month is Ramadan. I imagine that this is a very special time for everyone living in the country and I am wondering, if there are things that I should keep in mind as a visitor. Are there specific Do's and Dont's during that time? Are there things that might be percieved as offensive in the context of Ramadan, that usually are no problem? How should I deal with food, apparently all restaurants are closed? Are shops open? I guess I would not be expected to fast too? How about areas that are not muslim, like for example the coptic quarters of Cairo, is it the same there or do they go on just like the rest of the year?
I would be very greatful, if you could help me understand, so my stay during this period does not cause any trouble.

Hello Eva,
Yea thats right Ramadan will come in aujust this year,
about the important Dont's is not to eat on the streets in
public till the sunset, some people will feel bad to eat infront of others whom are people fasting, but don't worry cos most of the egyptians pay no attention if they found someone eating in the streets cos there are muslims & christians in the country, and about the Do's is to remain the dress code in the cities like Cairo, Alexandria, (a half sleeves & a skirts or a trousers is okay) but in some other areas in Egypt such as Sinai if you are planing to head there (Sharm, Hurghada, Taba,...) its okay there actually people there didn't feel Ramadan as much as they do in the other parts of Egypt,
& regarding the restaurants some are open as usual and some are't cos the majority of the people are fasting,
happy stay and enjoy ur time and if u included Alexandria among ur trip around Egypt, it would be my pleasure to drink something with you but after the sunset for sure!
