We are a group of friends that are going to Portugal for 2 weeks this summer. We are at the moment looking for where to live. We are looking for nice beaches, not too big towns, and maybe some nice nature to hike and walk in. Mostly a realxing hoiday. We do plan to rent a car.
We are flying to and from Lisabon. Do you have any good recommendations?

We have found a house in Baleal/near Penciche. What can you say about this area? Is it only for surfing/high waves? or are there good beaches for just swimming and realxing aswell? Is it a party/tourist area? We've heard that they have a world champion ship in surfing every year, do you know when it is??

All the best!

Hello Vic

I'm not from Baleal, but since there are no replies so far I'll try to help. Been there a couple of times. I live 50km'eish away.

I'd say it's a calm beach area, surf is clearly the typical sport but the beaches are awesome with or without waves, waves can be big at some places but also small and calm at another, don´t worry you can swim around and surely you can relax.

Not so sure about the tourist/party, but I'd say you'll find parties around, it's typical a place for your people with many surf guest houses, so I'm assuming they will have fun somewhere, I know a few bars in Peniche, also a few disco's around, I'm confident you'll have some funny nights.

RipCurl Pro Surf Portugal is the championship you heard about, it's amazing and the city/beach (its on Supertubos beach, not in Baleal) will receive tons of people and of corse the best surfers in the World. That's actually the main reason for my visits as I'm a surf fan and a sports photographer. The downside about this competition is exactly the "when" part, usually it takes place on October and well, you need some luck to have nice weather...

If you have some free time, make sure you visit Obidos, is a town inside castle walls, very beautiful. Also some beaches nearby, S. Martinho do Porto, Foz do Arelho, Nazaré, and my favourite S. Pedro de Moel (very calm beach).

Anything else you need, just ask :) better send a message though because I tend to forget visiting this forums.

Cheers, have a nice trip!
