Hi Anika,

Sadly, it is very early days for the vegan movement in Japan and such resources either do not exist or are scattered over numerous blogs ... many going out of date rapidly. Even the Japanese vegetarian society does not provide such lists (http://www.jpvs.org/Eng/ep1/index-eng.html is years out of date ...).

The most comprehensive and uptodate restaurant site to begin with is:

http://vege-navi.jp

We have just begun starting such a resource at: http://www.veganjapan.info and are hoping others will come and help us create it but there are only a few pages at present.

Likewise, there is no food labeling system, something else that we hope to work on.

Do you read Kanji, or speak any Japanese? The new edition of the Vegan Passport will be available from some time in Feb 2010, see: http://www.vegetarianguides.co.uk/products/veganpassport.shtml.

Where are you planning on traveling to?

The good news is that most traditional Japanese sweets, at least, are vegan! There are some truly excellent vegan cafes scattered across Japan and quite a broad base of macrobiotic cafes.

Thanks.

Our resources will grow in time, there is now a vegan meetup in Tokyo and Kansai area and a growing network.

You can also buy cartons of vegan dashi that are very good. A nice story ... the son of a dashi maker became a monk and so the father made a dashi he could eat (many eat shojin ryori style temple food which is vegan).
