help needed for Chinatown Project
Posted March 1st, 2011 - 4:53 am by from Hannover, Germany (Permalink)
I study photojournalism in Germany/Denmark and currently doing a project on Chinatown New York (here until march 7th). I have photographed the last 2 weeks on different events, public spaces and so on. I am now looking for contact to a family or elderly living in Chinatown, Manhattan. I am trying to get a better feel of how it is to live there rather than to show the look of a tourist. There is all the exotic things like temples and strange foods -but I would like to get beyond that and get to the human core. So to avoid ringing people's doors it would be great to find someone this way.
Any idea or help is highly appriciated.
Thanks so much!

Hey Nina,

I have two suggestions..

first, do a couchsearch using the keyword "Chinatown" ... while searching for folks who are able to "meet for coffee or a drink". Unfortunately you'll get a bunch of folks who like to go to Chinatown, but I think you might also find a few gems who actually live in Chinatown (with their parents, for example).

second, is to post your request to the general city group for NYC. Since you're not necessarilly looking for photographers to reply, you'll connect with a wider group of folks with fewer degrees of separation between you and a Chinatown living room.

depending on when you find a place and schedule a visit, I'd be willing to come along to assist and observe.. sounds like a really cool project, perfect for CS.
