AMBASSADOR GATHERING @ the "Vienna Calling - CS's 10th birthday"
Posted December 18th, 2008 - 2:02 pm by from Cologne, Germany (Permalink)

CouchSurfing will be 10 next year! Imagine all those great moments that every day are added to all over the world! Let's celebrate! Let's make those celebrations meaningful as well!

The Vienna CS community has already jumped on the occasion and is organising one of the events for this anniversary: the "Vienna Calling - The 10th birthday of CouchSurfing". Vienna is a good place to celebrate this occasion as it's very centrally located in Europe - and Europe and CS have indeed a history of their own;-)

Let's be honest - from time to time we all can have a certain inclination to be a bit... uhm... difficult, complex, challenging, and demanding. With CS we love it so much we want it to get better and better and have transparency and our voice heard as CS gets bigger and bigger and on the most part better and better! Phenomena like OCS and new creations like a European based super-democratic hospitality network are part of this;-) For most of us we try to make CS better in our own daily actions wherever we host and surf and meet.

US senator Mike Huckabee's said this in his Speech at the US Republican Party Convention 2 months ago:
"Barack Obama's excellent adventure to Europe...
... took his campaign for change to hundreds of thousands of people who don't even vote or pay taxes here. But let me hasten to say that it's not what he took there that concerns me. It's what he brought back: European ideas..."

Yes there are such things as ideas coming from Europe! Whatever about the differences between people of different parts of the world, it's true that European perspectives can be very useful with the great diversity of people and backgrounds present. Also the CS idea clearly resonates extremely well with the Europeans: half of all CouchSurfers are from or live in Europe and four of the top five CS cities in the world are in Europe! Having a celebration of the upcoming 10th Birthday in the #5 city in this ranking list, Vienna, just seems perfect! We believe that it's a good time to meet there together in order to channel to CS, at leadership level, the European perspectives on CS.

The main aims for such a gathering would be to get as many and as meaningful answers as possible to those questions we volunteering European CS'ers have for our leadership, to get as many European Ambs to get to know each other in real life and see where we might help each other by learning from our experiences and working together.

We have already spoken about our idea with Leadership Team members who do really want to encourage and support us and not see those of us actively volunteering for CS get disconnected or feel discontent with CS - and are open to these perspectives and whatever thoughts and reflections we come up with at our gathering. Rather than be just a talking shop, as may have happened in the past, our gathering will have a purpose - the channel of communication will be open!

In order to get this WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW:

FIRST OF ALL: to make sure that all European Ambs do fully understand everything it might be a good idea to have this text as well as the details in the initial posts of the threads (as referred to below!) translated into all you guys' languages.
COUNTRY AMBS: Please check back with your countries' ambs to make sure everybody understood everything and if-need-be provide them with a translated version in your countries' ambs groups (perhaps the guys from the translation team might be able to help you out on this - you can find the Current Active Language Team Leaders on this Wiki page: http://wiki.couchsurfing.com/en/Language_Team_Leaders - or perhaps in your language's sub-group of the "Language Team Leaders" group: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group.html?gid=3568 )!

In the next 5 months we will come up with a big catalogue with all the questions the European CS'ers have to the CS leaders - starting on regional levels with the CITY AMBS, proceeding on country level with the COUNTRY AMBS and eventually putting it all together on the European level with the (EUROPEAN) GLOBAL AMBS. And the NORMADIC AMBS IN EUROPE helping where they can;-)
FOR MORE DETAILS ON THIS PLEASE CHECK OUT THIS THREAD: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=16169&post=2055718

We'll send those questions to the LT so that they can prepare for what we are considering right now might come next then. To learn more about our proposals we have so far as we prepare for a gathering that will be meaningful and reflect your needs and interests CHECK OUT THIS THREAD: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=16169&post=2055741

APART FROM THAT we can of course use this first European All Amb Gathering to discuss other matters that are of pan-European interest. For some ideas from our side as well as for making your own suggestions and for further discussions GO TO THIS THREAD: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=16169&post=2055771

If you somehow can, please come! See if you can get some days off and a cheap flight/train/ride and join us in Vienna for four days of discussions, networking and fun! Online input is very valuable but nothing can be compared to live meetings.

Please join the "Vienna Calling - European ambassadors meeting" group ( http://www.couchsurfing.com/group.html?gid=16169 ) if you're interested in that project and hopefully consider attending it! There we can discuss in the next 6 months all aspects about this Ambs event @ "The Vienna Calling";-)
