public transport advice
Posted June 1st, 2010 - 4:04 pm by from Berlin, Germany (Permalink)
guys,
whats the deal about public transport in Vienna?

How much is a single ride, a day pass or any kind of 3 or 4 day pass?

In Berlin, the deal is: If you do 3 single rides per day, you can get a daypass for the same price. Now going from home to town and back usually is already 2 rides. If you have a full day in the city, you benefit from a day pass.

What would you recommend for Vienna? What are the prices? How common are controlls?

I ll arrice at 10.30am tomorrow at the Airport and would be happy for an advice what pass I should get?

Thanks
Caspar

wait: for 14 Euro I can have a ticket for 1 entire week??? Thats seems way to cheap!! Thats it?

If so, can I buy it at a ticket machine at every stop? Like the Airport?

yes, you can buy it at every ticket machine. a weekly ticket is only from monday to sunday.
a quite new ticket is the sms ticket, costs 2,2 for 90 minutes and you can upgrade it til midnight to a daily ticket for 2 euros. but I think, it works only with austrian sim cards with contract.
here the link to the viennese public transports:

another advice to get from the airport to the city center:
do NOT take the CAT (city airport train), take the S-Bahn:
with a valid ticket for vienna (wochenkarte or 72h or...) AND a single ticket for 1,8 you can get to the city center. works only for S-Bahn.

jep, it may sounds cheap but its true ;-)
and probably there is one ticket mashine at the airport ...should be :-)

> and probably there is one ticket mashine at the airport ...should be :-)

the is one ticket automat in the arrival hall - usually with a long queue
-then big signs direct you to the uselessly expensive CAT-
and 2 more down at the Railway (S-Bahn) platform

welcome to socialism ;-)

the link you gave states "valid for ANY eight days" - so,yes, you can use it in 3 months.

in fact, I had surfers that bought it but did not need all of them. So, they gave it to me for the future surfers - my surfers used it 7-8 months later... no prob.

only if the price changes, they (people that check this) might make you pay the difference - 1 or 2 EUR, whatever the difference is.

by the way, to your second Question:

NO restrictions - the tickets is about "Zone 100" which is about all 23 districs of the city (Metro, tram, bus, night line). Also valid for any regional train as soon as they enter the city borders - including the so called Vienna Regional train - "S-Bahn".
