And maybe remember that not everyone likes to have Pictures on Facebook ... so better put it up on Picasa, Flickr or our Gallery :)

I don't want to annoy most of good thinkers here but when I take pics I put them where I decide and not where others decide.
If you don't want your face to appear on my FB pics, just ask me I will cancel the pic If I agree with you that there is something wrong (like you are kissing somebody but it shouldn't be known for example!)
I will post my pics on my FB and Flickr account as usual and, if I have time I will post them on the vienna calling gallery too!

anyway, thanks for posting and please post more :)

Well, if slightly rude, spoken! It's the people themselves which will make privacy a thing of the past. We need no govermental controled conspiracy. All we need is a website where it's cool to be linked to a gazillion of pictures.

Welcome to the global village.

For non German speakers, a rough translation of iinka's post:

@ Matthias
I agree with you totally, even with private photos you must ask the people whether they agree with the publication.
I am so far that during events, where I'm not being explicitly photographed, the photographer should delete any pictures of me.

Another case for example would be if an employer sees you in a party mood or an other bad pose on a photo, it can also cost some people a job, or you couldn't get a new one, if you're just looking for a new job. Today, the bosses take their time to search on online forums such kind of photos. So I always tell in advance, not to photograph me.

I will no longer post any comment about this matter as I see our points of view differ a lot about life I suppose.

Let me use Wim Wenders and twist him a bit...

Nah...aber so in weiter Ferne!

Near...but so faraway!

I'm not willing to start the discussion all over again, but I have a quick question to this topic:

Originally I'm coming from Lithuania and back there exists a law about taking photos: Everybody is allowed to takes photos of everybody (including children) and use those photos in the ways they like (including selling them, putting to websites or newspapers, etc.) when the photo is taken in the public place (park, street, shop...). What about Austria? What is the law here?

Posted June 10th, 2010 - 8:26 pm by from Vienna, Austria (Permalink)
> What is the law here?

basically you can publish any pic you took on the street.
BUT.
if its someone in a grob entwürdigende (grossly embarrassing) situation (e.g. vomiting, loosing control, injured, naked) ist not.
if it could compromise someones career - say model- it is also not allowed to publish - thats a little waggly regulation.
also you must not use these pics for advertising.

AFAIK there is still no international agreement about "place of publishing"
say you put pics on flickr - an US Company. you live in austria, you did the pics in hungary, you log in in istanbul, via your french online provider. hmm, which law may apply?

lawsuits against stuff published in blogs or flickr are rare. simply because it doesnt pay off and may only draw attention to some rarely visited site, that will fade out in the big garbage heap anyway

Seriously i don't get the whole fuzz about it anyways, I mean it is actually a good thing to be photographed, at least i think so, because after some time has gone you mostly wish that there were photos available of you showing you at that event.

And to iinka's point: I personally think that you should never get yourself into a situation that could make a bad impression, and for that case it does not matter if this situation is photographed or not. And if there are pictures of you smiling and talking to friends, what bad impression can "future bosses" get of that? Oh wait, i won't hire her, she has a life and friends OMG!!! You make it sound like you are doing something that is not right or something to be ashamed of, when in reality couchsurfing events are not the wildest parties that are going on, the funniest maybe:P but not the wildest ones. You make it sound like everybody lies around vomiting, smoking weed and sleeping around, ok such pictures I could actually understand it then that people don't want those to be published, but normal nice party pictures like the ones from vienna calling? Maybe that's just my opinion because I never get in embarrassing situations myself, but yeah those are my 2 cents, and i didnt mean to start the whole discussion again , but just wanted to add my point of view:)

Posted June 11th, 2010 - 4:28 am by from Biedermannsdorf, Austria (Permalink)
oh and what I forgot, if I remember correctly, have I seen you, iinka taking pics like crazy at that one VC-event; the cooking workshop, so if you insist on people deleting pictures of you, doesn't taking pictures of other people without asking them first, make you a hypocrite? Or is it ok for you to just take pictures and tell everyone how you are against pictures of yourself, even though they may don't even plan to publish them and just want them for their own little picture-collection? Doesn't seem very fair to me if I'm honest...
