You can save a community bookstore! Please help!
I volunteer for a community bookstore in Washington Heights, NYC, called Word Up. We are now raising funds via IndieGogo because we were forced out of our old location after rent was raised unexpectedly. We want to re-open ASAP but need the funds!
Washington Heights is the lowest income neighborhood in Manhattan, has the MOST families and children, yet has the fewest BOOKS, save for this all-volunteer-run and not-for-profit book haven and arts community center. Even the schools themselves can't keep their libraries running. Kids NEED a place to access books and culture and Word Up is/was that place! We had open mics, live readings, poetry nights, music, film... you name it!
We also sold books by local authors and poets, had workshops and other programs for youth, and on and on. We need Word Up back in the hood!
Please check out our indiegogo page, where you can find lots more info, and I hope you'll consider making a contribution to our effort (there are lots of great perks you can get for your contributions!)
If you can't afford to help (I'm an artist myself, I totally understand..), perhaps you can at least help us to spread the word on social media (reddit, facebook, twitter, etc). Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Here's the link again, which you can post if you feel so inclined!
PS- I love this bookstore so much that I sang a love song to it! Click here to see the music video:
