advice wanted regarding big boat sea time (deck cadet)
Posted January 28th, 2013 - 4:27 am by from West Vancouver, Canada (Permalink)

I'm a deck cadet in Canada, we require sea time for our program and the assumption is it will be on freighters, cruise ships or something similar. However a sailing yacht with a qualified (and interested) skipper would meet the requirements. I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding finding a boat like that. My usual practice of standing on the dock and getting a ride wouldn't work as it does need to be more formal with paperwork, seaphase assignments and other exciting things.

Thanks so much for your advice

Happy sailing

Um... Are you SURE it would meet the requirements? If you mean deck cadet for STCW watch officer, a small sailing yacht probably wouldn't do. I haven't checked STCW for the details but it would ultimately depend on the authority which would issue your ticket. The Cdn Transport Dept or something like that. I doubt they would approve this as sea time towards your ticket. You should check with them first.

Good luck,
