Vagabonding NYC > SFO in 2 Weeks!
Posted December 3rd, 2012 - 8:21 pm by from Novato, United States (Permalink)
Hello all, I will be driving cross-country beginning on the 14th of December. The route is not yet set in stone, but is pretty wonky and could look like the link I've pasted at the bottom of this message, unless we take a more southerly route. Nearly 5,000 miles (8000km) on the road. As things stand now, I will be driving with a friend to New Orleans, where we will stay for 2 nights, beginning the 17th, and link up with another friend..

Then 2 nights in Houston, followed by a long-haul to a farm in Four Corners, CO, where we'll stay with an old roomie of mine. After that, destination is PDX, where I'll be seeing and staying with family. Finally, a (hopefully leisurely) jaunt down the Oregon coast, where we'll pick up my dear old grandmother, and ferry her to California, camping a bit at some choice beaches I adore, or hotelling if the weather's too crummy.

I've done long drives like this fairly regularly in the past and have a clean driving record, so would love to share the trip with some fun and friendly folks.

None of the itinerary is certain quite yet, except that we depart on the 14th of December, are in NOLA the 17th, and make it to San Francisco by the 29th. I cannot provide you a place to stay in New Orleans, Houston, or intermediary points, but am beginning to write couch requests at present moment. I always try to share my long-haul drives with others, so am posting this info here and in a few other groups.

My friends and I are looking for mellow, easy-to-travel-with sojourners who will relish this long trip, are self-sufficient, can share gas costs (sharing driving is a bonus too) and can juice up the car with good vibes and great stories. Preference may also be given to Spanish-speakers, card sharks, and frisbee hucksters.

Oooh, I'm glad I remembered this part: I've got a few cameras and think it would be fun to make a video-journal of the trip, which is something I definitely wish I'd done on past wanderlustings.

If you have any questions for me, or if you have suggestions on how to sculpt the journey, I'm all ears. I'll do my best to get back to all responders, but am suuuper busy these days, so may take a while.

Very much looking forward to this!

Hey! Your adventure sounds like so much fun! I know this isn't the response you're looking for, but I was wondering... if our paths happen to cross at any point, would you care to give my friend and I a ride? You see, we're college kids who have decided to spend our winter break exploring the east coast all of the way down to Mexico (but starting in Asheville, NC also on Dec. 14). We also intend to stop in New Orleans for a night or two. We're probably also going to stop in Atlanta, San Antonio, Austin, but our's isn't set in stone either. We're leaving our car in asheville because we really want the experience of traveling with just a backpack for a long period of time. We're open to hitchhiking, rideshares, and any form of public transportation, but since we're broke college kids probably mainly hitchhiking and carpooling... so, just let us know if you think we could keep in touch on our journeys and maybe meet up somewhere and share our experiences and/or catch a ride together along the way!

As it stands now Jillian, we will be leaving NYC on the 14th, passing through North Carolina for a stop-over in Columbia, SC to see my mother. Stay 2 nights and then a long jaunt to New Orleans for 2 nights on the 17th, followed by Houston for 2 nights. Then a super long haul to Four Corners. After that, PDX and the Oregon coast followed by San Francisco the night of the 28th.

Sounds like there's some good synchronicity in our routes, but to be honest, I'd like to do the rideshare with CSers who can split gas, since this is going to be a pricey trip already. Are you able to share gas and expenses?

Just let me know, and if you want to make itinerary adjustments, that's fine too.

Getting Psyched!

I've received a few responses already Sean, so as it stands now, my car is full. But... you never know how these CS roadtrips go, missed connections are common occurrences. I don't want to keep you hanging, but if there's space in my car, and you can share gas/driving, you are welcome to join us as when pass through Texas. Does that muck up your plans too much? Oh, and I don't think we'll be in Portland before the 27th. Colorado, maybe. But, 'taint quite set in stone yet. Ok then, hope this helps clarify your plans, but probably it didn't :)

Damn. If only a few days earlier!

I need to be to Washington for Christmas, so no go. But thanks for getting back to me. Have fun!
