the best way to experience the USA?

currently trying to find alternative things to do whilst in america, with key points like

A) staying away from big cities
B) meeting people who can show me the american way of life in different states of america, or just seeing and living the american way.

any info on small towns would be awesome

Try HelpX or WWOOF-USA...both offer opportunities to volunteer with folks while experiencing their way of life...
WWOOF-USA has a membership fee, HelpX basic membership is free...
Majority of volunteer situations are in rural or small town settings...may be what you're looking for...
I'm a CS host and am a host farm for both of the above groups...
FB page is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Prince-Bay-Farm/298930756791012 ...
HelpX profile is http://www.helpx.net/host.asp?hostid=13508 ...
WOOF-USA website is http://www.wwoofusa.org/index.aspx...
I'm sure you could find something to your liking if you tried volunteering during your holiday...
good luck on discovering the US...cheers from this side of the pond.
Peace
Nick

Hello Paul. I'd suggest you check out www.facebook.com/EverythingSmallTown
