How it works for all airline companies.

Your luggage should be checked through to YOUR FINAL DESTINATION.

If you are in China and getting on a flight with Southern Airline you should have them check your luggage all the way thru to the final destination, be it US, Canada, Europe, etc.

In this way the AIRLINES are responsible for moving your luggage from Southern Airlines to Air Canada without you having to be involved. I do not know if Southern Airlines did not inform you or was lazy or if you did not know or ask, but it should not have been Air Canada's responsibility to go and find your luggage.

If Southern Airlines of China did its job right, then the luggage transfers to the Air Canada flight and viola you are on the next flight w/o any hassles.

So I am not sure I understand your question.
1) Did you not know this?
2) Did Southern Airlines fail to tell you this and therefore not do their job?
3) Did Southern Airlines offer poor service and refuse to check your bags all the way through?
