Any good recommendations for Caribbean Coast (away from Cancun)
Posted December 12th, 2012 - 10:02 pm by from London, England (Permalink)
I will be travelling to Cancun with some friends and we plan to do a bit of a roadtrip down the Caribbean Coast. Does anyone know of some hidden places (less touristy spots) which are still beautiful? Not just along the coast, but also in land.

I would like to discover some authentic mexican culture (if it still exists in this part of mexico!) Perhaps some nice villages? less crowded beaches?

Any suggestions would be welcomed

For how long you will be travelling?

I highly recommend you TULUM, its a very peaceful area, with a beautiful Caribbean sea, some nice archaeological places. its nice to be quite, read, don't party and relax.

If you have more time, i recommend you to go in to Yucatan. Here you can go to one of the most beautiful and impressive archaeological site call Chichen Itza. Of course just if you are interested in these subject.

If you are not coming in the high season, you can go to Playa del Carmen, its a quite small town, with bars, nice beach, good party. its a tourist place, but not crowded. If you are coming for new years eve forget about coming to Playa del Carmen because you will hate it. Also if you are planning a long trip, i recommend you to go to Chiapas. For me is the best state in Mexico, full of nature, waterfalls, archaeological places, beautiful small city's with local people.

Let me know if you need anything.

Have a nice trip!! and enjoy Mexico

my recommendations in Quintana roo state(where Cancun is located)
: Felipe Carrilo puerto. a Mayan culture stronghold.
Sian Ka´an Biosphere reserve
Bacalar lagoon.
Chetumal. the capital of the state with not obvious tourist spots but great food and a emerald color sea.
last but not least in the border with Campeche state. there are plenty of Arquelogical places. all of them amazing and without the crowds you will find in Chichen Itzá or Tulum and other piramids in the north of the peninsula.
all these are more suitable to be visited by car: Xpujil, Becán,Chicanna,Kohunlic, hormiguero, Rio Bec, Calakmul...
