hi friend, I have read your post, I would recommend to you go to mexico city, if you want to go to tenochtitlan is closer than veracruz, you can go by bus from "Central del Norte" is not too far, you should go and back the same day is not very interesting spend a night there.

Well I hope you enjoy your trip, be careful and keep your lugage watching.

your best deal is couchsurfing in either Minatitlan or Acayucan or Jáltipan(while being there ask around is there "fandangos" going on somewhere nearby). and from there go on a day trip there.
I went there by car. but I know there are buses leaving from Acayucan to Texistepec(the biggest village in the county where San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan is located) and from there you should hitchhike to the the arqueological Zone.

Enjoy your visit!
Actually as in many smalls arqueological zones the best sculptures has been relocated to museums in the provincial capitals. In this case: Xalapa.
nevertheless it worth the time and effort to go there.
