overstaying visas

Hi,
I arrived in Mexico on a US passport. My 180 day tourist visa expires at the end of March. I've asked at immigration and I can't get an extension. I don't have much money to cross the border to Guatemala and come back (even on the bus it's the same price as a flight to another country!), and as I'll be leaving in early or mid April, I'm thinking of just overstaying my visa by 1-3 weeks. The woman at immigration said I'd just have to pay a fine for doing this, but it was easily taken care of at the airport. She didn't know the cost, tho. Does anyone have experience with this and know the cost of overstaying? Or if this has negative effects in the long-term?
Thank you!!
