Tarlabasi documentary film project
Posted October 18th, 2011 - 9:09 pm by from Edinburgh, Scotland (Permalink)

I'm a filmmaking student and I'm doing a film project about Tarlabasi. If you are living there or you know the place and its people then it would be great to meet you :) The most problematic thing for me is that I dont speak turkish (yet) and I cant communicate with people and make iterviews, so if you know turkish your help would be important.
Im at the moment of looking for the 'characters' for the film- especially Im want to meet "recycling people from Tarlabasi" garbageboys etc.
Write me if you are interested to help in finding people and participation in project.

These guys don't have stories, they just collect rubbish man. Unfortunately, apart from the decaying backdrop of Tarlabasi and images of poor guys doing hard work for no money there's not much substance behind it. You will end up with 5 minutes of guys complaining "life is hard, bad conditions, blame the governement blah blah blah", and maybe some tears.

If you did something like creating and education, shelter, food charity program for these guys, track the progress of a couple of key characters over a 6 months or a year. Live in Tarlabasi, take a real interest in thier lives and improving them, put some of your own money and hard work into it, raise money though fund raising activities etc.

In this case it could be OK.

Good luck,

hi Brett,

thanks for your critical answer. I know what you mean, I heard that maybe some people are regarding tarlabasi as some kind of photogenic "zoo", which is good subject to "exploit" somehow. But I as a documentary filmmaker I'm interested in understanding the real situation. I want to meet those people and speak with them about what is going on there. I want to know who are those people and what brings them there. For me its very significant place, because its very clear example of gentrification, and its like a battlfield between diferent urban forces, where the voice of unprivileged is being muted.
You said that I should rais money for them. I think its a thing to do if not for a goverment (which in fact wants to get rid of those people) to NGO's. Im just filmmaking student but I belive that understanding real situation, and explaining that to the world through the film could be maybe even more important then giving some money to few families. Its dificult topic, and great challenge but I want to do something about that place.

Hello Szymon,

It's a good subject. But i watched a documentary at izTv(it's a documentary channel) about same subject i don't remember when.

It's called "Şehrin arka yüzü Tarlabaşı".

In this documentary, there are a lots of interviews and stories from streets of tarlabasi. Locals, children, garbageboys, sex workers...

if you could find and watch this documentary maybe it somehow helps you.

Good luck.
