California Westcoast Trip in December!
Posted November 26th, 2012 - 2:25 am by from Berlin, Germany (Permalink)
Dear fellow Couchsurfers,

are there any people willing or wanting to do a roadtrip in December? I presumably would start in San Francisco and make my way south on the coast to LA but I'm very flexible, and spontaneous to alter my plans and open for new ideas!

I will be in California from mid-December to January 1st. I know that this is probably not the most popular time to go, but that's when I have my break.. I'm a German exchange student here in the USA and don't know many people yet so I would be really happy if there are some likeminded Couchsurfers to explore California with :)

Looking forward to your replies,

Hi, I'm going to be in California from 15 Dec till 6 Jan

thank your for your answer!
I found one fellow traveller already (http://www.couchsurfing.org/profile.html?id=IY6XVOF) but we definitely still have an open seat left.
My only concern is, that I read that you start your travel in LA?

Let me outline our preliminary itinerary so far:
12/18 Departure SF, Bay Area
12/19 Santa Cruz
12/20 Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur
12/21 Big Sur, Cambria, Morro Bay
12/22 San Luis Pismo Beach
12/23-26 LA
12/27 Drive to Grand Canyon
12/28-29 Grand Canyon
12/30 Drive to LV, Hoover Dam
12/31-01/01 LV
01/02 Drive back to LA
01/03-01/05 San Diego, Tijuana
01/06 End in San Diego

That is stil very preiliminary and roughly outlined and I appreciate any travel recommendations on this.
But if you really start in LA, it seems like we have unfortunately another route I guess!?

Hi, СChristopher! I'm arriving to LA on the 15 Dec. and I could arrive to SF on the 17 Dec. I definitely want to visit The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. How many days are you going to stay in SF and where (in hostel, hotel or cs)?
I think It's quite a lot time for towns Santa Cruz-San luis and I added Santa Barbara. We should visit Bryce Canyon NP and Zion NP in Utha. I agree that the best time to stay in LA on Christmas and NY in Vegas (altough 2 days isn't enouth).
On the 2 of Jan I have to stay in LA.
Are you going to rent a car or It's your own car?

I arrive in SF on the 14th and meet Agata on the evening of 17th at the SF airport. From there we plan to meet a car at the airport and depart from SF on the morning of 18th.
Can/would you drive?
The Bridge is definitely on my plan and and hope to couchsurf, but don't have a couch yet.

Yeah I agree, we could substract a day from the Coastal Route. It's not about the cities itself there, but rather about the route and the landscape. I'm not sure how long it takes and it depends on how many stops we do on the road I guess. But I sympathize with the idea to visit Santa Barbara as well it just adds 1-2 hours of driving to the trip.

I also agree on staying one more night in Las Vegas.
Bryce Canyon NP and Zion NP in Utha are surely interesting and tempting, but I can't see how to fit them in the schedule? And I think to see the Grand Canyon is the top priority first.

Yeah, on the 2nd of January we need to be in LA as well, because a friend of mine will join us there till the 6th.

Tell me what you think! :)

Hi, I could arrive to SF on 17 in the morning in order to visit Alcatraz and Golden Br. Althogh it will be difficult for me (because of changing time). Agata doesn't want to see SF at all?
Is it possible to leave LA earlier? Brion and Bryce isn't far from Gr. Canyon and Hoover Dam. May be it's worth to stay less days in Gr. Canyon? Do you know what will be the weather like at period time in LA area?
You're going to rent a car near of airoport SF?
Where are you going to stay in your road from SF to LA?
Where to stay in LA in Vegas and in your road around VeGas?
I think It's very difficult to find a host for three people.

That would be doable for SF. Agata will fly back to SF from LA and do the SF sightseeing after the roadtrip because she got a flight back to Poland from SF.
I don't think it is possible to leave LA earlier. It is so big and even hard to do the main sights in under three days.
We don't actually spend a lot of days at the Grand Canyon. It will be a two-day trip from the California Westcoast to arrive at the Grand Canyon. Then we stay there for a night close to the Canyon and head back to LV.

The weather around LA in that time is about 8° low and 19° high (in Celcius).

Yes we want to rent the car at SF airport on 12/17 evening.
We don't have any places to stay yet. We want to start searching for couches in the next days. I agree, finding a couch for three will be more difficult. One or more persons may need to go for a cheap hostel/motel/airbnb in some places or Agata even said she wouldn't mind sleeping in the car either.

About the parks you mentioned: The idea about having a car is to be flexible. We can see if we have spare time left to visit them, I doubt we will but we could see.

I agree that it is necessary to rent a car. I think quite a lot of days for road from SF to LA is it worth? We should understand where to stay each day. To be honest I cant sleep in cars at all.
And one thing I'm not so experience as a driver. Are you a good driver? How much does it cost to rent a car?

Hey Derik,

I appreciate your advice. Well, we definitely don't want to rush it and see the coast. The way is the goal here, I guess. So under that light, to do the coastal trip from SF over Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Cambria, Morro Bay, San Luis Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara - how many days should we plan for that? I would assume 2 to 3?

I will post this itinerary on another travel forum, to get some advide how long we need for some places...

I'm a moderately experienced driver, although not on the American automatic cars. But I would be confident to drive. Agata doesn't drive.
If I drive it will be more expensive to rent the car because I'm under 25. But I found quite a good offer and we should anticipat about 650$ for three weeks without gas. If you drive, the car rental could be cheaper.

Could you tell me what is it airbnd?
I think three days is enough. We could arrive earlier to LA or see smth around SF or LA. May be to start driving earlier to Gr. Canyon or you want to celebrate Christmas in LA? It's better to stay together at night.

airbnb.com is a website where you can book a couch/bed/room from private people. basically like couchsurfing just with money instead of couchrequests. usually cheaper than hostels, but with 3 people also difficult to get like CS, I assume.

I will encourage Agata to state her opinion on the rest as well.

Hi Christopher, you've planned a very nice trip. Is there an available seat for a fourth traveller? I'm arriving in San Francisco the 16th.

I'll be in California from December 18 (I land in Los Angeles) until January 2 (again from LA). San Francisco is definitely on my wish list.
