Hi Renee,

I don't live in LA I live near San Francisco in California. So I cannot really comment on the details of LA or San Diego. But i'll do my best. :)

The LA local bus schedule and stuff can be found here:
http://www.metro.net/

Local LA to LA area train routes can be found here: http://www.metrolinktrains.com/home/

For Sandiego the trolly info can be found here:
http://www.sdmts.com/trolley/trolley.asp

If you want to take the train from LA to SD take a look at Amtrak www.amtrak.com

Budget airlines
They can be inexpensive if you book far enough ahead of time.

Southwest Airlines www.southwest.com is inexpensive and goes almost everywhere in the USA. Also you can check 2 bags on the flight for free!!!

Virgin America www.virginamerica.com is a nice airline to fly but does not have very many routes.

Jet Blue http://www.jetblue.com/ also doesn't have many routes but is another nice airline.

If you like to travel by train then you can look at Amtrak www.amtrak.com They have trains and busses though destinations are very limited. Sometimes a train is cheaper and sometimes a plane is faster and cheaper. Our trains are slow what takes 1 hour by plane will take about 8+ hours by train.

One of the biggest Bus companies in the USA is Greyhound though I wouldn't recommend them. I would not take the bus if you can avoid it.

Hi Renee and Selamat Datang,

I am happy to hear that you will be visiting California.

The best time to visit California would be Fall. During the fall, the temperature is better and you can take a hike or a stroll on the beach. Summer is hot but you're from Malaysia so the heat here is nothing. If you go to the beach alot, I would come during summer. During summer, it's very crowded everywhere because it's a school holiday for 3 months. So usually, travelling is very expensive. If you're trying to save money, I would avoid travelling during May 30th, July 4th or Sept 1 weekends. Those are public holidays so prices are very inflated. If you like to party, I would come on those days because there are crazy beach or pool parties during those weekends. Overall, Los Angeles have the same temperature all year.

I live in Orange County which is 30min south of Los Angeles.

In USA, I think the budget airline here is Spirit Airline. I heard it's really bad though, I never had tried it. However, most flights are cheaper when you fly on Tuesday and Wednesday. Those are the days where people tend to fly less. If you are flying, I would suggest you fly these days. You can use kayak.com to search for the cheapest flights available. Kayak searches for you on other search sites. Not all airlines are the same quality. I tend to favor Southwest and Jetblue. They do not charge for checked in bags. I think other airlines like Delta, American, United etc charged for checked in bags and even carry-on bags. You should sign up via email with Jetblue, Southwest and Virgin America. They don't advertise their flights on search sites like Kayak or Priceline. Jetblue, Southwest and Virgin America also email special promotion or deals. Sometimes you can fly from LAX to SF, Vegas for $50 one way or to Seatle for $70 one way.

I am not familiar with the public transport in LA or from LAX but there should be a bus to the city. Unless you are very familiar with the public transport route, I would suggest taking a shuttle or a taxi to your destination. Even some locals don't know how to use the public transportation because public transportation in Los Angeles sucks. I think once you arrived at your hostel or hotel, you can find a way to the Union Station where you can find more information on buses, trains and subway. The subway and buses can take you to most places. The trains are confusing as well. Metrolink takes you to places around Los Angeles and cities under Los Angeles County such as Long Beach, Norwalk, Cerritos. If you want to travel to San Diego, Orange County (Disneyland) then you must take Amtrak.

I am not sure where the backpackers are in LA, but they are some backpackers hostels in LA. Search from hostel.com
I would recommend you stay a hostel near the beach such as Santa Monica, Venice Beach.

I would stay in Los Angeles and San Diego for a brief stay. Los Angeles have more things to do but San Diego is less touristy and less crowded and better beaches. The beach view is better in San Diego. Mexican food there is better too. San Diego is 3 or 4 hours away by train so you can do a 1 or 2 days trip to San Diego.

I hope I answer all your questions, if you have more, I'm more than happy to answer.

Eric
