Anyone up for a road trip December 13 - January 7?
Posted December 2nd, 2012 - 11:01 pm by from Sioux City, United States (Permalink)

I'm in Cedar Falls, IA and I don't have a car or a license, but I want to spend the next month touring as many different places as I can, but my list is long and even Grayhound is getting expensive. Any help would be appreciated!

Des Moines, IA - MUST be there Friday, December 21 - Sunday, December 23.

Chicago - Must be there January 7. Final stop before going home.

Flagstaff, AZ
Dallas, TX
San Antonio, TX
Orlando, FL
Mexico City, Mexico
Toronto, Canada

If you haven't already, you should try Megabus. I live in Chicago now, but I've taken Megabus back and forth to my hometown of Des Moines. Although Megabus is a lot cheaper if you buy your fare several weeks ahead of time and travel in the middle of the week.

If you're taking Megabus remember that you can only check one bag into the storage compartment, although you can also bring some carry on luggage if it's small enough.

Also, after buying a ticket, the website will display your confirmation number, then email you your reservation number. Do not get the confirmation number and reservation number mixed up because you will need your reservation number to be able to board the bus.

Speaking of Megabus, you can take it from Iowa City to Chicago, and then Chicago to Detroit. It drops you off in downtown Detroit (Rosa Parks Transit Center), and you can get right on the Tunnel Bus that takes you to Windsor, Ontario. From there, you can catch a bus to Toronto.

You can also take Burlington Trailways, an Iowa-based regional motorcoach company with pretty competitive prices. They're not Megabus-cheap, but they're cheaper than Greyhound (and much more reliable). I've ridden with them before, and had a great experience. They'd be useful to you, as they have a route (green line) that stops in Waterloo, with Des Moines on one end of the line and Chicago on the other.

If you wanted, you could take Burlington Trailways from Waterloo to Des Moines, then Burlington OR Megabus from Des Moines to Chicago, then to Detroit, Windsor, Toronto. Keep in mind, though, that traveling by bus is about the slowest way to go. Starting in Des Moines and doing Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago will definitely take up your whole time. It'd be a great trip, though!

If you come to Detroit, I'd be happy to meet up. I moved here from Iowa City (my hometown) in August, and have learned a lot about the metro in a short time. I love the city, and have a number of CS friends/acquaintances I could connect you with in Detroit and Windsor. If you just need information, I'm more than happy to provide that, too. Hope to see you in the Motor City!
