Perú-Ecuador Border Danger
Posted July 7th, 2010 - 5:12 pm by from Lima, Peru (Permalink)
The Perú-Ecuador Border Area between the Peruvian department of Perú and Ecuador has been reported as being dangerous by several sources, including the mass media.
Three of my friends, as well as several friends of friends have been mugged there. Furthermore, there are reports suggesting that Police members might be involved with the thieves. 2 of my friends were attacked by several guys who escaped in a motorcycle. My friends were brave (as most of my friends are :-), and opposed fierce resistance but were outnumbered, so they escaped after failing in taking their their big packages, they only managed to take cameras an little backpacks (unfortunately containing their most valuable stuff).

Haha, I am one of Ulises' friends that had their "load lightened" on that border! In Tumbes to be precise, during daylight and it was a set up - taxi driver in cahoots with two guys on a motorbike that mugged me right outside the Cifa station. I have met others who have also been robbed, or almost robbed there.
My advice to ya'll is to AVOID that border if at all possible and head a little further inland and cross via Piura-Macara-Loja. Supposedly much safer and relaxed. Also, this border crossing will bring you right by Vilcabamba, a great little town in Ecuador that shouldn't be missed : )
Happy and safe travels!!
