Will be in Montana and would like to meet and surf with locals
Posted August 18th, 2012 - 9:14 am by from Pulheim, Germany (Permalink)
Hi folks,
I already made some individual couch surfing requests last night but as time grows short I will also post here in this group:

I know it is very short notice but until recently I wasn't even sure if I would be coming. My main reason for traveling to Montana is to visit my host parents of 36 years ago. In 1975/76 I was an exchange student with AFS in Ohio, where Mom and Dad still live. ( I have by now become a host Mom , too. Most recently to a a lovely girl from Ohio, who just left this July)

However, they always spend their summers in Cooke City. They were supposed to pick me up in Billings on the 19th of August but now comes the glitch: Mom had to have unexpected knee surgery delaying their arrival by a week. Since there was no way to change flight dates I am now unexpectedly on my own for a couple of days.

I decided to rent a car and do some exploring on my own figuring I'd do something pretty far away from Cooke City in a region my host parents are unlikely to take me to.

So Kalispell and surroundings and Glacier National Park it is and I am now looking for people who might like to offer me shelter and talk :)
Landscape, even as beautiful as I expect Montana to be is only half the story.

Please do have a look at my profile and see if you might like to meet me!

I think I will be able to pick up mail and hopefully will have a working phone (number yet unknown).

Warm regards from Cologne, Germany,
Konstanze

Konstanze: I would like to help but am unclear as to how long you would need to stay with us and what dates you would arrive and depart? There is a small window of opportunity in which we might be able to accommodate your request.

Hello Dennis,
thank you very much for both your reply and pointing out that data is missing...
I will pick up the car in Billings between 10 and 11 am and then tackle the road to Kalispell. Google say its a 7 to 8 h drive so I should arrive at Kalispell sometime around 8 pm. Never having been in Montana before I don't know if this is a route that has you stop and stare a lot...

So I would need a host for the night 20th to the 21st. After that everything is still open as I can't estimate how long it will take me to do the things I tentatively planned or how long it will actually take me to get from place to place. Any advise you can share is very much appreciated!

Hopefully I will have a working phone so can receive and send messages. But don't know my number yet.I should also be able to pick up mail if there is either umts or an open wlan along the road.
Warm regards,
Konstanze

There are several routes which you are able to reach Kalispell and all of them will have you stop and stare a LOT.
Google is accurate in the amount of time it takes to reach this area and think they would have you on Interstate Highway 90. Be warned there is a lot of SPACE between places and it may seem like forever getting from point A to point B. Just saying :)
Since you didn't say, I will assume you are traveling alone. I will not be available during that time period as I have a scheduled photo shoot in the Dillon, Montana area, however I will ask my wife if she would be willing to host you for that time period.
I will warn you that trying to find motel/hotel accommodations in this area is quite difficult because of our proximity to Glacier National Park.

Blessings,
D.

Thank you, Dennis, for both the advice and asking your wife!
How intersting that you are a professional photographer as I come from a family of photographers, too. My father was one and my sister still is. The family owned photography shops in Marburg /L for at least 30 years but not any longer.

Yes, you are right, I am travelling alone. Husband and son are staying at home. School starts this coming week and Björn (son) is in his last year of Gymnasium. He returned last summer from his year abroad in Malaysia jumping a class and needs to make an extra effort now.

Thank you also for the advice on the difficulty of finding a motel. I will just hope that kind souls will offer shelter, as staying in a motel, even if I can find one, on my own doesn't appeal to me! My husband also feels much better to know I am with people rather than all alone :)

In an case I am sorry to not meet you but thank you for your effort in helping me!

I sooo look forward to staring! Cooke City will also be the highest I have ever been, and I am curious to find out how the height will affect me.

Even if your wife is not comfortable hosting with you away please give my best regards to her!

Best regards,
Konstanze

Konstanze!
I have good news! I spoke with my wife, Ann, and she said she would love to host you for that time period. I will give you her cell number: 1-800-871-9009. Mine, should you find that you need it: 1-406-270-0774.

A little about Ann: She was also an AFS exchange student in high school but a bit earlier than yourself. I believe that her exchange took place about 1973 and it was to Germany as well. I will let her tell you all about her adventures there.

Please get in touch with us so we may firm up our plans. So sorry that I (most likely) will not get a chance to meet you. Perhaps another time?

Could you please send me a couch request on couchsurfing.com and I will accept it. If you decide to stay an extra night I will be back from my shoot on the 21st and we could meet and talk. I would love to chat and meet with you.

Hello Dennis,
I just tried but it says "Couch unavailable" Perhaps your setting of Unavailable because of traveling makes it impossible request...
