Hitchhiking in Montana
Posted December 6th, 2012 - 4:30 am by from Bellingham, United States (Permalink)
Hey y'all I think I may try my thumb in western Montana next summer. SR-93 and everything west of Glacier and Flathead national forests. Thoughts/advice? And besides Missoula, what other towns would you say are traveler-friendly/worth checking out in the area I just specified. Gracias!

The one time I hitchhiked in Montana it went very well. Got picked up in about 5 minutes. Went from Bozeman to Missoula- took about 4 hours. Recommend stopping in bozeman, missoula, maybe butte. Generally most people are friendly to hitchhikers, although Montana has a wide range of diversity and views so always be cautious.

Good Luck!

Note that the one place it's illegal to hitch in western Montana is I-90 around Deer Lodge--home of the state prison.

But if your travels bring you down MT 200 through Sanders County and you need a couch in Plains, you'd be welcome at our place.

Whitefish is a nice town. So is Hotsprings,

The National Rainbow Gathering of Loving Light (etc) will be happening somewhere in Montana next summer with most folks here July 1 through July 7

So you might have some hitch-hiking company if you are around then.

The only thing I'd say is that everything is pretty spread out so when you leave one place there isn't much for miles until you get to the next place. Just cows horses and hills and valleys and mountains. Bring layers because the weather could be warm or hot or rainy and cold even snow at high elevations.
