Planning a trip through North Dakota...

Hello locals and knowledgeable travelers,
I will be on an open-ended road trip that begins with a drive through the northern-border states. My first stop in North Dakota will of course be Theodore Roosevelt Natl Park, and I plan to take I94 east through the state. I am wondering what those who know the area best might recommend for spectacular sights or notable stops; places that are particularly photogenic. Or if there are any neat cities along the way to stop at.

I expect to be coming through in late May, maybe even early June - are there festivals or events that I should try to hit during that time? Most big cities have some sort of weekly event they do during the summer months, like concerts in the park or something. Basically, anything you can recommend is appreciated - in the cities, I try to absorb the local color and culture as much as possible. Im into dive bars, iconic stops, local treasures, anything that is uniquely "North Dakotan"

The only thing I can suggest is Mandan has a state park and they have an old fort, some houses, and an indian village to check out it. It was pretty cool when I saw it back in the day and I'd suggest checking it out again.

Also, google "scenic north dakota roads". I think there is one over by valley city right off the interstate.

That's about all I know since I live in Minot. Let me know when your on your way through and if were not seeding I might beable to meet you in bismarck for a beer.
