New to town and looking for good venues
Posted January 4th, 2013 - 6:54 pm by from Seattle, United States (Permalink)
Hey all,

I am moving up to Vancouver next week from Seattle for a new job. I've been to a few good parties in Vancouver and know there is a good scene, but am not very familiar with it. What are some of your favorite venues that regularly play electronic music?

If anyone hears of a good party over the next several weeks feel free to pass the details on to me!

Thanks and I hope to see you all around!

Tim

Went to a good party a few weeks ago called Mood Hut at a place called China Cloud that occasionally has parties. The music was discoey house; not sure if that's your thing but I think they mean to have them every month or so. They have a mailing list at www.moodhut.com. I'm also interested in hearing more answers.

If you like drum bass, there are groups like SHAHdjs or digital motion events who are inviting some dnb)and dubstep/rap/electronic) djs to Vancouver :)

I check http://www.residentadvisor.net/events.aspx?ai=39 every now and then for events.

Open Studios puts on awesome events and is a great venue. https://www.facebook.com/open.studios/

The Waldorf brings in some really nice talent, as does Fivesxity altho the drinks are a bit steep, and the Electric Owl.

Here's probably a good and long overview from RA fromt he authors point of view http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1549 all depends a bit on what you're looking for.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will look into everything you mentioned and sign up for mailing lists etc. Can't wait to move and get acquainted with the scene. Definitely like disco inspired electronica (i suppose it all is, if you want to get technical) and DnB so thanks for those references. I remember going to a really great psytrance night at a club in the DTES but i don't think it exists any more. What a shame!

Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem is DJing at Shine on Thursday. Should be good, if it's to your tastes.

There's also a more underground/hipster party on Saturday called Mood Hut, which I think I mentioned before. Should go from "10" to "3 or 4" at the China Cloud; enter through the back alley.

Hey Tim- I'd keep an eye on Fortune Sound Club in Chinatown or else Ginger 62 on Granville St. Normally Granville is overrun with douchey drunks from the suburbs but check out their website and sometimes Ginger is hosting some wicked dj's and they kind of sneak under the radar of the regular party goers. Fortune has one of the best (if not THE best) sound systems in the city and they tend to shake it up often with music varieties but a good electronic mix will tickle your soul on that dancefloor!

Good luck mate,

Trev
