I do not know what kind of visa you are holding, if it's allow you to work like working holidays visa , you can look at the backpacker job board like www.backpackerboard.co.nz

or, go to www.bbh.co.nz , loads of hostel there help you find farm works while you staying with them ( weekly rate, mostly) and provide transportation to-from work place as well. ( but only you got a working holidays visa/ work permit)

I worked for picking & packing Kiwis or mandarins in Kerikeri,Bay of Island - New Zealand in Northland.

May ask them as there is the well known Kiwi's Area.
In KeriKeri there is a Holiday Camp where we stayed and they provide transport to work and accomodation but unfortunately i canT remember the name of the Camp.
the payments are not bthat good but it keeps u alive if u donT smoke :)
South of Auckland there is also achance to pick Apples too and always looking for people.

May not very useful but hope i could help u abit at least.
