What are your Great Ocean Road Highlights?
Posted January 19th, 2013 - 7:48 am by from Melbourne, Australia (Permalink)

I will be doing a road trip when my sister comes to visit me in Melbourne soon. I was wondering if anyone wouldn't mind sharing the highlights (destinations, hostels, experiences) of their Great Ocean Road travels?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Leah,

The Ocean Road seems to get better the further west you go, from Lorne onwards I would make sure I saw the fol:

Apollo Bay - Has a decent backpackers hostel, lovely beach and interesting harbour and a few arty sort of shops.

Cape Otway - Good to head down here to have a look at the lighthouse and there are campsites at Blanket Bay, plus good walks along the beach. Millions of Koalas dropping out of the trees, as there is a plague of the things and they are destroying the Manna Gums they live on.

Johanna Beaches - Brilliant, and you can camp at Glenaire.

Lavers Hill/Otways - Temperate rainforest and very beautiful. The shop at Lavers Hill is an expensive rip off, try to avoid buying fuel there, but there are fantastic walks and tracks for mountain bike riding if you like that. Also the Otway Fly is touristy, but worth a visit. There is a decent 1:100000 map available of the area.

Princetown - Beaches and Campsites, costal walks, quiet. Also has a backpackers.

Princetown to Port Campbell - lots of lovely bits of coast, Gibsons Steps, 12 Apostles and little bays which us locals keep secret. (Couchsurfers get a guide !)

Worth diverting 20 km or so to the Apostle Whey cheese factory on a dairy farm nearby.

Port Campbell - Lovely little town, restaurant and cafe service generally poor as this is the turnaround point for bus trips so no one seems to care. Gorgeous bay and backpackers right on the beach. Lots of cliff walks and things. Snorkelling is great with loads of rays depending on season, and surfing.

Port Campbell to Peterborough - My favourite bit, remote and rugged, lots of cliff top paths and viewing places, quiet and lovely beach at Peterborough with whales passing depending on the seasons.

Peterborough west - Bay of Martyrs, Bay of Islands, Worm Bay and Halladale point all very much worth seeing.

It's a lovely part of the world, but don't try to 'do' the Ocean Road in a day or so - spend more time and enjoy all the secret bits.

It is also worth considering a few days in the Grampians while you are down, very lovely up there.
