NYE in Sydney
Posted November 20th, 2012 - 11:24 am by from Skofja Loka, Slovenia (Permalink)
Hey guys,

I will be in Sydney over NYE. I'm travelling alone and I would love to have some company while I'm in the city and to celebrate NYE with.

Every year I watch the NYE celebration in Syd on TV, but this year I want to be there :-).

I would like to see the fireworks displays in the evening over the Harbour Bridge. So I'm thinking a BBQ on a viewing spot, like parks on the harbour. I have heard the ideal viewing location is Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

I'm up also for any other activities in the city and nearby beaches while i'm in the city.

Would anybody like to join me? Let me know :-)

See you,
Polona

Hi Polona,

I will be in Sydney with a friend of mine and as we did not made any plans yet, we might as well celebrate NYE with you! Haven't heard of Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, but if that's the spot, then we'll be there!

What you should do is have a look at the Sydney group (https://www.couchsurfing.org/n/places/sydney-new-south-wales-australia), as the messages and people are more relevant. Scroll down a ways and look for Michael Zarb who made a post about 1 month ago that starts "New Year's Eve). It will have some useful tips for you including places to party and accommodation.

The sad news is if you have not found a place to sleep, you will find it very hard to. Accommodation needs to be found months ago. The main recommendation I can give is to find accommodation further away from the centre of Sydney.

Hey guys,
I look forward to meeting u all in Sydney.
I found accommodation in Wollongong. It's not the centre of Sydney, but I have place to stay. You should check nearby towns too.
We can talk about the place and hour of meeting for NYE closer to the date. You can write me a private message and we can exchange the numbers.

Does anybody know if we have to pay to enter a park from where you have a good view over the harbour bridge?? I have heard something about it, but I hope it's not true.
Anyway we will have to be there very early to get a good spot.

Enjoy your travels!!!

Hi Polona,

I don't know anything about that, but public areas including parks are free to enter. It would only cost money if there was a festival or event on that required an entry fee.

You are not allowed to bring alcohol into a public area.

For public transport (trains and buses) you can use the website http://www.131500.com.au. It is 1.5 hours by train from Wollongong to Sydney central. If you would look for accommodation in Woy Woy or Gosford north of Sydney, it is almost 1.5 hours as well.

Plan your travel early - arrive in the afternoon not the evening, otherwise you will have a lot of time and effort to arrive (fighting the crowd) and the good spots to sit will be gone. Some people will be there all day to claim their "spot" ;) If you're going to hang in a park, take a picnic blanket/towel/sheet to sit on and mark out your "spot".

As the night wears on mobile phone networks will become conjested so if you are going to hang at a park or an area, have some "meeting points" setup in case you lose your friends or a friend is arriving later. Eg "meet at the corner of this street at 6pm".

Good luck and have fun! Myself, I might be either in Newcastle on the beach or in a Sydney city apartment near the water ;)

Hey,

I'm in sydney with 3 friends. We didn't really plan much for the NYE, just to go to the firework and hang around. So it would be nice to gather up with you guys. What are your plans finally?

Hope to meet you soon!

Manuel
