Buying a car is tricky if you don't have much time for selling it in the end, what if you can't get rid of it? Also, you are only going for 5 weeks which seems too short to consider buying a car.

My advise would be to rent, and we had multiple good experiences with Budget: http://www.budget.com.au/default.aspx.

I suggest you check that out!

Have fun!

I would suggest the same, renting a car.
But be aware that when you are under 25, you may pay a special expensive fee....
Be careful about other additionnal fees (I have a bad experience with relocation), I can advise http://www.economycarrentals.com/
you don't have any cancellation fees if canceled 24h before.
You could also rent several cars on your trip, so you don't pay your rental when you are in a city for some days for instance.
Good luck.
