banking system, can i start an account here
Posted September 7th, 2013 - 7:03 am by from Cabanatuan, Philippines (Permalink)
Hi, I’m going to visit soon and really appreciate if i can get some advice. Can I start a bank account here? I am on a tourist Visa. Staying for 3 months. Instead of carrying so much cash and to minimize fees, i like to start an account, and then I can transfer funds across in one hit. Later I may use the account to for online shopping! Thank you very much, any guidance is appreciated.

Just opened my own payroll (checking & savings) account here myself. I reccommend Citibank for the following:

Branches open until 7pm daily.
Accounts now come with a Visa Debit card, which may come in handy for your online shopping, but check when you inqure/open.

It's perfectly fine to open an account with a tourist visa however as in any country you need a ton of paperwork to do so. Such as;

Passport (For identity in lieu of HKID)
Lease agreement (For mailing address)
Employment contract (Proof of income)
Any bank statements from your home country, to be used as a 'permanent' address with your mailing address wherever in HK.

All these need to fulfill certain conditions, and all can be used interchangibly so just bring whatever is official and has your name, address from home/address in HK.

I can also reccommend as a sidenote reddit.com/r/hongkong for any other logistical queries in future.

Good luck!
