Did anybody try this route?
The first thing i read about it is this
. Obviously, it only gave me a boost to get there without a guide :D Then all I could find (by simple googling) about the pass is here.
My LonelyPlanet guide does not mention it.
I'm pretty used with hiking-mountaneering-rockclimbing through Italian Alps, and I can use properly GPS nav, compass & maps. More important, I learnt to admit to retreat.
Is it THAT hard and THAT dangerous?! Is there anybody around there who can hint and provide you a map?
I soloed Rabbit Pass last March in a two day push. Long days. Two spots are very exposed. The ascent by the waterfall and the descent where you need to lower your backpack first. Got lucky and got over before clouds moved in and whiteout. It was pretty high stress to do it solo. I woulfd have had a lot more fun with a partner and itwould have been less stressful. If you go solo I would recommend renting a locator beacon from DOC. You can call me for more details, 021 2173058
Whoa, thank you a lot! I won't do it solo, I'll tramp with a friend of mine - we'll land in Auckland on Jan 1st. I'll send you a text as soon as I have a NZ number - if you'll be around there we may meet, else maybe I'll call you for the details.
Did you get the message when I replied to your first email?I couldn't log in, the usual way. If not let me know and I will try again. Happy planning.
