Travel buddies 3 months by campervan starting Feb 2
Posted January 6th, 2013 - 6:03 am by from Baltimore, United States (Permalink)
Hey all,

I've decided to make New Zealand the next stop on my RTW trip. I actually booked a ticket so I'll be there on Feb 2 and plan on staying 3 months and then bounce off to the South Pacific. When I first arrive in Auckland I will be buying a campervan ASAP, within the first 3 days hopefully. I also plan on picking up a mountain bike and or kayak along the way. I don't expect anyone to contribute towards these items but would prefer someone to cover the bulk of gas, we can split food cost. It would be nice if someone else wanted to kayak or bike as well and would buy there own, that way we could fish and explore together. This trip will combine land, off road and sea. I'm going to try and find a 4x4 to have even more options.

I love to cook, food is my passion for life. I also enjoy hiking, photography, fishing, reading, talking and snorkeling. I've been dreaming about cooking fresh lamb chops on my charcoal grill sitting by some remote beach or lakeside. Obviously we won't be eating Lamb every night but you get the idea. Food will be a BIG deal on this trip! Hopefully no picky eaters as we would have a hard time together. If you're going to be in the country during this time and would like to do something similar, let me know. No problem if you want to drop and out along the way or just want to catch a ride somewhere.

Bless up!

Hey Sharon and Qianyi!

Since you're both near Christchurch maybe we can all meet up together. I'll keep in touch and let you know when I'll be in that area.

Thanks for the tips Haykey! I had planned on buying in Auckland since the supply is so high and there are alot of desperate people at the backpacker car market making it easy to get a good deal. Then selling in Christchurch where the supply is much lower, at least that's what I had read. I'll make sure I get chains. I'm looking for a nicer van, similar to yours. Hopefully a Toyota Hiace that's self contained. I've been looking on Trademe to get an idea of prices but I can wait to get there before I buy. Nice to see you use a Hennessy, I love mine and can't wait to try it out in NZ. I'd like to buy your guide if it's ready or if you have any good spots you'd care to share. Maybe see you on the road.

Hey John!

I am in Auckland, staying with a friend right now, but my holiday starts around 1st of February. Have no specific travel plans just yet, so why not get together & talk it through?! :)

Hi Kate, I just changed my date because I'm going to New Orleans for the Super Bowl! I'm now arriving in Auckland on Feb 18th. I still have to buy a campervan and then I'm heading all the way South over the course of a few days. If you're still around during that time let me know, I love to get together and talk about it.

Travel safe,

I will be in Auckland on Feb.15th and hope to stay until 18-20th - so maybe we can still meet up and share a ride to the south island.

How many bunks do you have? it seems that there are a lot of other people interested....I could make other arrangements once we get to the south island as I have invitations in Christchurch and Wellington..just need to get there.

I'm back, now that my Baltimore Ravens are Super Bowl Champs I can travel in complete satisfaction! I'm not sure how many bunks I'll have yet. Chances are it will be a queen bed and my hammock. I'll likely buy a cheap tent to have another option since the van will transport more than it can sleep. Once I get into Auckland I'll update everyone and we can go from there.

Aloha John,

Congratulations on your Superbowl win!

I am a light sleeper/non smoker and need a comfortable bed, so if there is no room for me to just get to the south island, I can make other plans, as I know you have other people who want to go (I am no longer a camper either)

I will check in on your updates.

See you, Venetia

Hi John,

Hope your travels are going well. I am couch surfing in Invercrgill on a wee farmlet then off tomorrow to Help-X for a couple of weeks on Stewart Island working with some smoked salmon producers who also create aioli and vinaigrette for sale in the farmer's markets...should be fun to be back in the kitchen again, and also out in a beautiful nature reserve.

After that I plan to travel to Te Anau, Doubtful Sound,Milford Sound,Queenstown, Wanaka and the west coast of the south island doing Arthur's Pass, the heading north to Franz Joseph and eventually to north island to see all the cool places there....in case our paths should cross! E-mail me if any of this appeals?

Happy travels, Venetia
