Coming to PNG 17th of December

Hey all,

I am coming to Papua New Guinea from the 17th of December (arriving in Port Moresby) through to the 1st of January and was wondering if anyone else is travelling at this time/if anyone could give me any advice whatsoever?

I plan on endulging in the PNG lifestyle especcially food and music and would love to spend as much time with locals as possible. I am really interested in the traditional ways of living and would like to head out to some of the islands and am curious about gaining accomodation (as obviously this is something that I can't really organise in advance).

Does anybody reccomend any particularly good islands or other places? Really just looking for people to share their experiences and advice with me!

hey, i think the best way to meet locals is being openminded, using public transportation and share food from the market. the locals we met were really friendly and if you are lucky someone might invite you to their village. the people are very smart and interested in all sorts of things so chatting is nice. but dont expect to meet people on the street that are dressed traditionally or have paint in their faces. that sort of thing is only happening in very remote places or to cultural festivals (we have been told).
a good way to experience the coastal lifestyle is probably to chew betelnut and people are usually happy to show you how its done.
we also heared that the trobriand islands are supposed to be a nice place to experience culture (but havent been there).
then there is the madang festival on the 24th-25th of november (know you wont be there but maybe someone else is reading it too ;)

safe travels

Hey Matt,

I went to Madang the other week.

Krangket Island just off Madang seemed like a good place to experience local life.

There is a couch surfer who lives there too but he hasn't been replying of late.
