Free Camping in Canada
Posted January 29th, 2013 - 4:17 pm by from Vancouver, Canada (Permalink)
Hi!

Two friends and I are planning to make a road trip by BC and Rocky Mountains in August. We have to decided whether renting a camper-van is a good idea or it is better to rent a normal car and sleep in bed&breakfast/young hostals/etc.

Thus, I want to ask you:
- Is it legal to do free camping with a RV or Van in Canada?
- Is it safe? Could we have problems with bears?

Any comment or recommendation will be welcome!

Thanks for your help,

Jaume

Hey Jaume, as long as you park in a location where no one will find you of course it is free! However if you wanted to be in a cozy campground spot with amenities you will be paying their fees. Many large parking lots of places like walmart are popular overnight spots for campers. If you go into the backcountry there is likely nobody who would bother you about it as long as you practice leave-no-trace ethics and are respectful of your surroundings.
Depending on the time of year and location you are camping in it's pretty likely you will encounter bears, so don't be surprised if one comes sniffing around your camper van. Reading up on bear safety and carrying bear spray / a gun only if you know how to use one / having a dog with you will help. Really just taking precautions is your best bet, but there are always dangers in the wilderness.
