winter sun (and malaria??)
Posted May 3rd, 2013 - 8:58 am by from Whangarei, New Zealand (Permalink)
Hi, We are trying to plan a winter sun break in Vanuatu this winter but are struggling to find self catering accommodation.

We would love to spend 6-7 nights in a self contained / self catering place (can be a room / unit / chalet / anything small and cheapish) and then splash out on 3-4 nights in a resort.

Can anyone help with suggestions of places to stay? We'd like to split our time between two islands.

Our main concern though is that everywhere we read about malaria throughout Vanuatu. We wont be giving the children anti-malarials as they are too young (and will probably spit them out anyway).

We appreciate any thoughts, suggestions and ideas, thanks.

Thanks in advance for your help, Karen

In Vila the Hibiscus Motel is a good place to stay, it's self catered and cheap (1500Vatu a night, you won't find anything cheaper in Vila) but also very nice etc.

There are a load of resorts around, they're all pretty much the same. Never been to one but I'm sure they are nice.

If you wanted to go to another island could go to Tanna: it's a pretty awesome place, also Ambae, Pentecost and Ambrym are all worth visiting too. There are no resorts here though (think there might be one on Tanna?) so it'll be be pretty basic accommodation just in bungalows or a basic guesthouse etc. But it's all good really, you'll be well looked after. And there's Santo, the other developed place in Vanuatu but it'd be shame to come here and spend all your time in Vila/Santo.

Yeah there's Malaria. Can't really tell you what to do here, if you don't plan on taking tablets then make sure cover up, use spray and sleep under a mosquito net.
