[Need Suggestion] Traveling to Brazil, Chile, Peru on July-August 2013

Hi all, my name is Priska. Me and my amiga will travel to South America this July. We have bought plane ticket (return ticket) from our country of residence (Jakarta, Indonesia) to Sao Paulo.

We will attend World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, after that we will travel around Brazil, Chile, and Peru. We will skip Argentina because it requires visa. We are traveling on a VERY TIGHT budget :-)

Several cities we want to visit are Lima, Cuzco, Arequipa, Valparaiso, Santiago, Foz de Iguaccu.

Based on your experience, which way/route is THE BEST and THE CHEAPEST for traveling? We will start from Brazil (either Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo) and end in Iguaccu before departing home from Sao Paulo.

I've learned that if we take bus from Brazil to Chile, it will cross Argentina and it requires visa, that's why we are thinking about taking airplane (to Chile or Peru).

But plane ticket is very very expensive. :-( Is any of you know about how to use airpass? I've learned that there're several airpasses such as Hanh airpass, GOL airpasss, TAM airpass. While LAN airpass is more like frequent flyer program. And others like Aerolineas Argentia airpass sometimes more expensive than the usual airlines ticket. So far, I cannot find the airpass calculator.

For our last rute, we want to take bus from Iguaccu to Sao Paulo. I've learned that only 2 bus companies have this route: Pluma and Express Kaiowa. Is that true? Is there any cheaper way from Iguaccu to Sao Paulo?

And I'm kinda confused here. Is buying ticket online many months ahead (plane ticket or bus ticket) always cheaper than buying go-show in the city? Or is it cheaper buying ticket on ticket agent in those countries?

Thank you veru much! I appreciate your suggestion. :-)

Hola Priska!iu would suggest you to try to change your return ticket to Jakarta either from Santiago de Chile or Lima Peru, you will save money and time.
you can travel by bus to Peru or Chile avoiding Argentina but you have to cross Paraguay and Bolivia,so you will have the chance to get to know two more countries.Do not worry about the bus tickets the easiest way is to get them in the bus station and there are more bus companies from Foz de iguazu to Sao Paulo.Enjoy your trip!

Your travel itineary is a bit odd if you want to save money and/or assure you're on a "very tight budget."

Some facts about your travel choice:

1) Brazil and Chile are the most expensive countries in South America.

2) Going from Brazil to Chile means flying. That would make your travels more expensive, especially in July which is high season in South America.

3) If you plan to fly in and out from Sao Paulo, that means you would have to spend time and money to go back to Brazil just to return to your country.

4) It would make much more sense to fly into Sao Paulo and fly out of Lima, for example.

Maybe you should explain how you plan to do the loop around South America.
