Couch for money
Posted February 19th, 2013 - 8:50 pm by from Mangaratiba, Brazil (Permalink)
If you instead of getting an invitation to surf a couch and only got replies with "hosts" interested in making money, please, leave a negative reference. Cs is not a business venue!

Unfortunately I heard about another story and ask you to use your neg reference to tag these bad hosts.

>Olá meu amigo, tudo jóia?
>Seguinte, estou hospedando uma CSer de HK que esteve aí no RJ durante o carnaval e fiquei surpreso quando ela me contou que alugou o couch mais barato que achou, pois todos a quem pedia estavam cobrando pela hospedagem. Você tem conhecimento desta pratica por aí?

I dont see it as a bad thing, i mean, charging for a home stay... because there is a cost envolved in hosting someone.

So far i wasnt able to find a couch anywhere, and boy i did send requests.

well,
let me not to agree with you.
in fact don't be so quick with judging these people, cose the circumstances can be different. better to stay for money with the trustworthy person and enjoy the carnival in a real apartment, than in big dorm in a dirty hostel.
i met great people, travelled to Rio and enjoyed the carnival, this matters more than money!
cheers, Tati

You are just too blind. You can make great friends while staying at somebodys place and at the same time be requested to contribute with some expenses not bcause they're here to make money but bcause this were not your parents to give things to you for free. It doesn't mean either that everyone who charges for a stay will accept any request they receive bcause once again , its not abot making profit but simply bcause they also want to make friends so if they don't feel a connection between them and the couch requestor, they'll refuse the couch request but if they accept even so there could be a charge bcause some people don't get paid well so they don't have money to cover someone else expenses with food, electricity and even time to hang around with them. Don't be so close minded.

Just to clarify, it is against official policy to ask for money for a couch.

Community Guidelines point 5:

"Don’t Charge for Your Couch

Our community offers free exchange of hospitality. Asking for money or labor in exchange for your couch is not allowed."

Hi Guys! I agree with Joe....

It goes against the policies of the CS and against the essence of this website ....

If someone wants to charge money for hosting people, should use newspapers classifieds or create their own "couchcharginfsurfing" tool..... but definetly not in here.

if the person "Don't feel" financially able to offer a couch, just don't do it.. set up for "available to hang up" and keep meeting new people...

I grew up in the favela here in SP, and we always shared food, things, offered help and never expected any money or some sort of financial compensation. JUST LIKE IN CS :) the same idea, same philosophy ;) and this makes CS cool....

and people who pays for it is also very wrong cuz is supporting this kind of behaviour from those ones that wants to take advantage....

by the way, meeting nice people, traveling around, enjoying big celebrations, if all of this things Matters more than money? why should we involve money in it when we are not suppose to then???

just my opinion
Kanimambo for all!!

I think we re just so not used to share and give for the pleasure of giving that we find it normal to make people pay for their staying.. I believe a host in CS shouldn't charge for accepting to host some one, on the other hand a guest can help by making a meal or offering a drink!! a symbolic way to thank people!! a good company is a way to pay too...but in our world that counts less and less...

Of course, that's why the CS site started. The idea of helping someone for the sake of helping. The exchange of ideas, culture and experience.

Sadly, the CS site has change A LOT since its founding. With nearly 5,000,000 members, the original goals have been lost for those just wanting a free place to stay and others wanting to make some cash.

But the bottom line is, as per the link i provided, it is 100% against the rules of CS to charge money for a "couch". That's the bottom line. Anyone found dong so will/should be removed from the site.

i feel you, but the idea of couchsurfing is to connect ones with other through cultural experiences not to look this as a business...
